While doing some dealing with an American acquaintance of mine, he inquired if I had any extra axe brackets available.
I had to admit that I had heard of, but not seen one on Canadian jeeps. Did I miss something here? I know the US jeep had the ax mounted on the passenger rear fender. Did we ever use this location or were ours relegated to some other location? Understandably, the radio mounts , if so equipped, would obviously necessitate relocation of same if so equipped. Looking for answers from our expert panel. ![]()

My 53 M38A1 has the brackets and had the holes for the radio mounts as well. I guess with a radio you didn't need an axe! So with the radio holes welded up to stop water from shooting up through them when in the rain and until I find a suitable replacement for it... there will be an axe there..More use to me in the big city than more radio.
Funny the local and federal laws will alloy you to carry an axe out in the open but not a replica fake or dummy weapon mounted to the body...makes the mind wonder...Oh to be a Senator...Shoulda been a newscaster!

So Casey, was the axe an add on or originally there?
As far as extra holes, usually better to put a nut and bolt in place rather than weld up! That way it maintains originality and stops the water at the same time. I know I have seen this done on many MVS in various places, I assume to have the mounting available if needed.

My 53 jeep (M38A1CDN), which came directly from a Crown Assets Disposal Corp auction, has the bracket, while my 67 jeep (M38A1CDN2) does not.

Hi Chris yes it had the mount braket and rust to show it was there from waaaay back at least at the time they Crown Assets let her go...that was 1976. So it was not removed and there were holes that were there that yes I welded up but too short to be a radio set...?
Not sure what they were for but only on one side. I usually use a pan head bolt and nut where i want to keep but plug the holes like with the antenna holes that were on the front right fender meaning it should have had a radio set...and yes the fender is from this jeep...rust patterns match. Unless we were there and used it or have an eye whittness account we may never know what happened to any of the equipment...all speculation. I do know that the Military particulary the Army did not believe in banging out a large dent before applying filler! ![]()
