Rob does not remember it as a C5. I spent a lot of time with them as a C1, and when the improvements were made to the guns, they became the C5A1. I was issued one of those as a crew weapon for my MRT in 1996/1997, when they were finally withdrawn.

Technically, it should have become the C1A1, but DND thought there would be confusion with the C1A1 rifle. Technically, there is no C5, although I think they did put that on the cover of one of the manuals.

There is a market in the US for C5A1 conversions. As a result, there are even guys supplying and even making up the necessary pieces to convert the M1919A4 into the C5A1.
