Does anyone know for definite the actual location for 9th August 1944?
The modern day photos used in battlefield histories are a bit vague as to the precise spot and I believe this is because of the changes in the landscape since 1944. The modern Google view of the area ![]() A 1947 view. ![]() The village to the far left is Estrees La Campagne and the wooded area is in the bottom r/h corner ![]() This is (I believe) the location as it fits well with the map of the position drawn by Lt. Gartley in Reid's book (pg 314, No Holding Back) ![]() ![]() Note that the enclosing hedge or the field is no longer shown in the modern view and a small copse has grown up on the left. ![]() Some details do not match so I wonder if anything else is available to fix the location. |
