Worthington Force
Does anyone know for definite the actual location for 9th August 1944?
The modern day photos used in battlefield histories are a bit vague as to the precise spot and I believe this is because of the changes in the landscape since 1944. The modern Google view of the area http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/1...rcegooglev.jpg A 1947 view. http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/1...cation1947.jpg The village to the far left is Estrees La Campagne and the wooded area is in the bottom r/h corner http://img859.imageshack.us/img859/1...cation1947.jpg This is (I believe) the location as it fits well with the map of the position drawn by Lt. Gartley in Reid's book (pg 314, No Holding Back) http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/1...cation1947.jpg http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/6144/tiger2120002.jpg Note that the enclosing hedge or the field is no longer shown in the modern view and a small copse has grown up on the left. http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/1...rcegooglev.jpg Some details do not match so I wonder if anything else is available to fix the location. |
This is the best info I've found. You are right about changing landscape. I was there last October and it doesn't look like the b&w photos.

I'm not sure where the memorial is in relation to these photos but these are a tribute to the BCR & the Algonquins.
