HI ALL,
recrntly I have done the bracks in my carrier. I ddid put some greas on the bearings when I put them back, and here is the qustion- how does it lubricated? only thru the oil bolt on the wheel? how much oil shuls I put in? there is a lot of place for a lot of oil. Im gussing that that the oil "thrown" when the wheel spins, still, huw much oil?? thanks arie |

Arie,No oil in the bearings. Just use a modern wheel bearing grease for packing the bearings. Don't fill the cavity. Maybe a smear around the inside if you want.
The inner hub seal keeps the grease in and the dirt out. The outer hub seal stops the diff oil mixing with the grease. Back in the day, I think a bit of extra grease was pumped into the bearings at servicing time. Todays grease is so much better. How often are front wheel bearings in a (rwd) car repacked? Nearly never done.

There's a grease nipple on one side of the hub, and a vent plug directly opposite.
Remove the vent plug, give it a shot or two with the gun, and replace the vent plug. If you don't remove the plug you risk "blowing out" the seal(s). f

They are called a button head fitting, and I believe they were originally from alemite. There are two sizes of head...the carrier uses the smaller ones. They are still available commercially, along with the grease gun adapter.
