Default 25 PDR Cartriges

Hello GUNNERS, in Montreal Québec, we have founded a new BTY called:
3rd Montreal Field Battery of Artillery. This is one of the first name our 7th Bty of the 2nd Fd RGT had. We are the new owner of a 25 PDR, this was owned by the 2 FD RGT. We fire the gun at different events with the RGT or on our own. Our problem is that we only own 4 cartridges that we refilled.
Does any one have or know were we could find more?

Thanks
UBIQUE

good morning Warrent!

My understanding is that the Dutch army still use the 25 pounder on special occassions.

Perhaps Hanno may have a source< I presume you are looking for cases.

Regards

Col

RSM, there are artillery shell collectors out there. Perhaps some google searches and poking around the various forums will produce some leads.

My second thought is to find the authorized military museum organization. The 25pdr was so common, it would be remarkable if every museum didn't have one or more empty cases in their inventory. If the question is asked the right way, you might find new life for a forgotten artifact that has been stored indoors for 60 yrs. It might be cheaper too.

Out of curiousity, how do you reprime and fire the shells?

No offense was intended as being Air Force where all WO are the same grade thought never crossed my mind.

Suspect that down here there would be cases, but the problem is the freight or mail costs do not help the situation.

If you found enough could be cheaper to fly Max up with case full, might bring a new thought on long range border raiding.

Wish you luck in your quest.

Regards

Col

Hi Jon...
I read the Col's posting originally and was at a loss to reply at the time..But your posting opens the door for my reply...

Col..
In The Canadian Armed forces, since the Unity debacle, instituted by an ex corporal by the name of Hitl.......ahhh...Hillier...there have been three distinct warrant officer ranks..
Warrant Officer..Master Warrant officer and Chief Warrant officer...in that order..

On each base there may be more than one Chief Warrant officer, wearing the "Prancing Ponies" in silver...but there was only one "Base Chief Warrant Officer".... called a BWO...Whose distinctive Rank insignia was The Prancing Ponies in Gold....

I believe all three services abided by these ranks, during my service, which started when I joined the RCAF in '63 and ended in '77 with the exaulted rank of Warrant Officer..

The BWO sat at Gods right hand,The Base Commander, and God forbid any rank..Commissioned,non commissioned or other ,that ran a-foul of the BWO...
Life for that individual could and did become hell...

And New Lieutenants were a prime target for his ire and lived in fear of crossing paths ,even casually with the BWO..that man could spot a loose thread on a new louie at 1/2 a mile..and the his roar could be heard at two miles...and God help the poor louie if he didn't cover the distance between himself and the BWO in Olympic Record setting time in in his hurry to Address the BWO face to face..
Now I'm sure that if I should be so fortunate to reach the Pearly gate, and gain entrance,I'm sure that when I get to see the "Big Guy",standing at His right hand ,will be a BWO,,,,,..Bank on it...

There are plenty on the collectors market in the UK but as you say postage is a problem.

Regreatably the army over here replaced all its 25 pounder saluting guns with 105mm light guns approximately 10 years. This was obviously done to save money but using modern guns does not have the same style. Presumably they must have scrapped their stock of cartridges because large numbers have not appeared on the market.

The Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery must have the same problem sourcing cartridges for their 13 pounder guns. The guns now sit on re-manufactured carriages as maintaining the old ones was proving too problomatic.

you may want to think about having a addaptor made to fit in the breach to fire 37mm or 40mm blank rounds.

Correct, they fire blanks for ceremonial duties.

All I know is fireable (is that an English word?) shell cases are highly sought after, any and all the Army guys manage to find are prized possessions.

Sorry I can't be of help.

Hanno

Default 25 pdr ammo cartridges

Hello Gilles:
I hope that you have been more successful than the Limber Gunners in finding more cartridge cases.
Maybe we should make a contact with someone associated with the Pakistan army, I understand that they're still using the 25 pdr or have just recently retired these guns. Maybe it's wprth a try if someone could help us out here.

Hello,

We are a group re-enactors in holland and we use the 25 pounder also for blank firing, the shells we use are the original shells and it works verry good.
But they are getting hard to find here as well. i can look for you.
We re-enact the Royal Canadian Artillery of the 1e Canadian Division.

Hi

The 62 Field Artillery Regiment in Dublin Ireland was using 25-pounders as of last November and could be a source for you.

I do not pass out email addresses but if you wish to send me an email off-line, then I will pass it on to my contact in the regiment. He will probably reply.

Doug
