CFR Plates over the years

Can we please try to keep this on topic as much as possible.

I recently (yesterday) acquired this pair of CFR plates from a fellow forum member and was lucky enough to have Brian Gough act as the runner who collected them from the seller who was at the OMVA show in Acton while I was doing far more frivolous things in the Newmarket area at the same time. Thanks to both of you.

We do not (in my opinion) need provincial plates here, perhaps someone else can start a thread on those ones if they have an example.

What I would like others to comment on and show is different types of DND issued CFR plates over the years and the variations contained therein.

These ones are galvanised steel and have the working side painted, rather well.

I have no clue what era these are from and what differences there are but perhaps we can try to explore and show them here.

That is a ferret plate judging by the CFR. Yep...just looked it up and it is the ferret in the Borden Museum.

There was actually a modification instruction for the plate you show. Because "DND" means nothing if the vehicle went to Germany or elsewhere overseas, there was a plate that was supposed to be riveted over the DND with the word Canada, and two red maple leafs would be affixed to the corners.

Later the CANADA was embossed in that location. Again, two red maple leafs decals were stuck to the top corners of the plate. Originally, the leaf decals were cut exactly like the shape of the leaf. In the late 80s they went to a "home plate" shaped decal in white with the red maple leaf on it. I knew one of the young ladies in major equipment who used to cut out the maple leaf from the decal so it would look better. We got paid by the year, and it was pensionable.

Below is a shot of the "DND" plate with the modification. I have the modification instruction here somewhere...I'll see if I run accross it.

Also is a shot of a NOS plate of the latest version.

So would the center one be a Provincial plate ??

No, the center plate is a later plate issued to privately owned motor vehicles (POMV) of military pers posted to Germany.

From what I recall but cant find my pictures yet there are a few more variations that I have witnessed from late 1980s to present.

There are likely to be many variations in the construction of these although the basic specs will be identical. This is because DND passes the responsibility for plate manufacture to the vehicle supplier. I am not sure when this started but it forms part of the contract for the Iltis and Bombardier had to supply the plates, number them and affix them to the vehicles (in accordance with the vehicle CFR number) prior to delivery to DND.
