| Comments: This is a superlative page that performs a valuable service. My father was a "D-Day Dodger" in an American engineer combat battalion in II Corps of the 5th Army. He landed in North Africa and fought his way up Italy, building bridges, and roads, and rebuilding airfields at places like Foggia. Pages like yours help me to appreciate that the Italian campaign saw the true application of the principles of the United Nations. Dad never forgave me for my fascination with all things British. As I discover the role of the Canadians in the Italian theater, I hope his spirit will meet me half way. His father's spirit will I am sure, since he worked on the Canadian Hydro plants at Niagara Falls before WWI. I am something of a plastic modeler, and hope to do some Canadian Shermans in Italy, thanks in part to the excellent decal sheets from Ultra-Cast and a useful booklet by Doug Dingwall, I think. (Almost but not quite.) 170 Lynx came to Oz. 30 went to the bottom of the ocean during WWII. There are the remains of about 15 Lynxs' over here that have been found sofar. Only one is a runner in South Australia, there is one at the Armour Museum at Puckapunyal (Vic), and another cosmetically complete at The Melbourne Tank Museum. The rest are just bits and pieces. I have some information on these civilianised trucks, and some FATs were in fact converted to trucks or even buses! I have a lot of CMP Trucks, as well as MCP CC60L trucks to British Army order. | Comments: I have almost finsihed the history of General Motors in the British Isles from 1899 to 1954. I have spent years researching the history of GM in the UK, and also in Canada, and have also undertaken a lot of research on Fords as well. I am researching the history of GM Limited's Southampton Plant from 1938 to 1998. In April 1940, most of the Chevrolet assembly plant in Southampton was leased to the Canadian government ["the CANADIAN MECHANIZATION DEPOT" or "CANMECH" for short] for the assembly of CMP and MCP Chevrolet trucks, some Ford CMP trucks, Ford and Chevrolet sedans: 4,400 or so, from May to November 30 1940 when the Plnat was bombed. Assembly was then switched to GM Limited in Lancashire, Citroen Cars Limited in Slough, Berkshire and a myriad of other companies all over Britain. The Canadian Army set up camp next to the Slough Trading Estate, and the second "CMD" was created. I have a database of every type of Chevrolet CMP chassis, CMP-based Armoured trucks, Staghound, MCP Chevrolet/Maple Leaf/GMC trucks, cars, etc. produced by GM of Canada or GM Corporation for Canada, plus civilian pattern trucks supplied for the British government: Ambulances, coal trucks, canteens, etc. I have details of all the engine number series, model numbers, etc if anyone wants it! The Canadian Forces saved our backs in May 1940 after Dunkirk, and the Brirish Army took huge numbers of trucks in 1940 having lesft theirs on the beaches. | |

Dad was a member of the force whose job it was to clear the beaches of mines prior to the landings. I may be wrong, but I think it was Juno Beach on which he landed. Mine is minus its armour and has had a merc truck motor put in, with the single distributor cap but is otherwise in great shape, obviously just a runner and used for fun. The second one, however, faired better and for the most part is correct. Could you recommend a replacement paint and who might manufacture it, something suitable for a Canadian machine? Should anyone have a CMP, many parts such as wheel cylinders, engine parts and wheel bearings etc are available from a good auto parts supplier. Bring the originals and quite often the part numbers can be cross-referenced. Brake shoes can also be relined if you have the specs from the manuals as well. We small but happy band must co-operate and work together, whether it be discovering, recovering, restoring or simply recording, everyone has their part to play. A local MV enthusiast, Barry Jameson, hopes to recover a Ram from a local Army range this summer. I don't know where he is going to put it, he has three of my M18 TDs and two 155mm Howitzers in his yard. His biggest problem, the enviromentalists are worried about the damage to the ground while it is being recovered! God help us. Probably the best restored Fox Armoured Car is the one that used to belong to Geoff Maskell from Sunderland.
