Thanks Keith, that was very good of you to put the picture on.

Now to work out how these Indian trucks got to Japan. In my research I have discovered that the Indian Army was part of the BCOF for a couple of years.
Were the trucks delivered straight to Japan or did they go to India first? Some of course then went from Japan to Korea in 1950 with the Australian Army ,which we have photographic evidence of, from the AWM.
It would appear that the trucks were left in Japan after the Indian Army departed Japan in 1947/48.
Gifted, sold to the Australian Government?

Default Canadian spare tyre carrier ?

I bought this spare tyre carrier yesterday. I am hoping it is the correct Canadian carrier for a 20 inch tyre on my Indian C60L.

This is all I have. I searched for a picture of what goes on the opposite end to the little ramp to stop the tyre rolling off.

Would someone have a picture of the opposite side?

One picture I saw shows brackets that lift the carrier up above the chassis, similar to Australian brackets but with pressed in strengthening dimples.Click image for larger version

Default C60L Derrick

I bought this to save it and it was reasonably priced, then worked out that it was the remains of a Derrick. Chassis number is 38443S01368 there are no plates on the dash.

I am assuming the truck is RAAF as I have searched the AWM records yesterday and today and this chassis number is not there, as far as I can tell. The closest I can find is 38443001355 ARN 143412.

In civilian life the truck was used as a log skidder. The chassis is perfect and seems to have been reasonably well looked after. There is no engine or gearbox or lots of other things including the Derrick, I think I will never get to fix it, but it is nice to have.

Many years ago Ken Hughes RIP loaded some parts on to my truck, at his Caboolture block, with a perfect one of these. I was impressed at how well it worked and how well he worked it.

Default Raaf 207664

Hi Ken

Your truck, chassis 38443S01368, was RAAF 207664, a 'Truck, Crane, General Purpose'. (The RAAF clerk had entered the 'S' as a '5', in the register, by the way).

It was taken on charge on 21 Oct 1944, and sent for disposal on 29 September 1954.

The GP crane was also called a 'Truck, Heavy, Crane, GP' by the RAAF - they were pretty inconsistent with their nomenclature.

Regards

Mike

Good day,
Thanks for the invaluable information on the truck Mike, I don't know how you do it so quickly. I spent 2 days searching ARN 40,000 to roughly 150,000 although I do get side tracked a bit. Then I got within a few ARNs of what is needed then nothing. I really appreciate you sharing your valuable historic resource.
The truck has now got a soul.

Graeme, looks like the same bus there can't have been to many like that. Thanks for putting the photo on.
Ken

Hi Ken,

Always happy to assist where I can. You were lucky: the data was in my files, just had to look for it. It's always a bit hit-or-miss with these things, as the data is far from comprehensive.

Default Chev Cab 13 engine cover

Good day,

I thought I read somewhere that the cab 13 Canadian Chev engine cover and the Australian Holden engine cover are different.
Is that correct?

Default Ford 6 seater utility

Good day,
I got the RAAF Derrick Chev shown above home this week, and I am happy with it. I might poke an engine in it one day. I have a 235 spare, unfortunately it has the engine mounts on the side not on the front like the 216. Lucky I am not in any hurry.

I also purchased the C15 and the F15 that was in the paddock with the Derrick.
The F15 is interesting. I thought it was a bitzer, it is the opposite sort of, the ARN on the front is 53899 which is a Ford 6 seater utility and I assumed that the front had been put on to the F15.
I bought 2 Ford transmissions from the same place, and 1 of the boxes has the correct chassis number 3G24582 for ARN 53899. So I have the remains of a hard worked and 6 seater utility.
The rear part of the cab is not bolted on and is fitted upside down. There are other tell tale sign on the back and sides of the floor pan to indicate it was a 6 seater.

I only purchased it to fit the springs and axles, to my Cab 11 F15 which will make it easier to move it around. Funny thing is both trucks have had about 30 inches added to the middle of the chassis.
The 6 seater has a tac sign with a Boomerang at the bottom but I can't make out the top part clearly, it could be a crocodile, maybe.

Thanks for the tyre carrier picture Andrew. That carrier looks shorter than mine, I like the design of the fixed end, that has some character. I will use that design for mine when I make it.

Cheers Ken

Hi Ken

Here is a link to photos and measurements for the Canadian made Pattern 13 engine cover http://canadianmilitarypattern.com/P...20Drawings.htm

Hope that somebody with a Holden Pat 13 cover can take a look to see what the differences are, might be that they are completely different and not interchangeable or may be that they are just different and are interchangeable as a unit.

Cheers Phil

Thanks Phil, those detailed measurements will be handy. I do have an engine cover in my Indian C60L but would like to have the correct Canadian one, I suspect the one I have is Australian.
Your pictures and measurements will be a big help.

Default Ford 6 seat utility

I went up the road to where I got the 6 seater from, to show my friend a photo of what the truck looked like originally. He said I better come for a walk up the yard and have a look at the other bits that he had found in the last few days and see if they were part of the truck.

I now have the original roof and the front door posts. It appears my friend's Dad had started to convert the 6 seater to a F15 or wreck it, not sure which.

Here is a photo of the door posts, a photo of the interior of the cab and one of the very faded tac sign.

Default Chev 6 seater utility

It is funny how things happen. I was going through Wayne Henderson's thread on the perfect restoration of his Chev 6 seater, and when I got to the last photo with the beautiful pleated seat, I noticed the anchor on the floor for the seat restraining strap. I knew I had seen one of them in my junk pile.
So down to my bits and pieces behind the shed, to an old Chev cab I saved from a local wrecking yard 30 years ago. I have never done anything with it as the roof has always annoyed me as it is made out of 2 pieces.
It turns out it is a Chev 6 seater cab, complete with a fairly rotted original wood frame seat and the left hand side appears to have a strap very much like the one in Wayne's photo.
Unfortunately the cab doesn't have any visible ARN.
I took a couple of photos and was interested in the 2 little clips riveted to the passenger side only, near where the front windscreen lock is.

Hi Ken, I've just caught up with your posts from 5 years ago! Congrats on finally detecting the Indian Army registration number. I checked my BCOF and BCFK photos for similar numbers but only found the same ones you did already. They're mostly in the 497xxx range and are all Canadian built vehicles, ie. steel bodied. This is unusual for Indian Army vehicles which normally had local pattern bodies like Australia, except they never progressed from timber to steel. I found an IWM photo of what looks like 501303 in Sumatra with the usual late production Indian Pattern timber body. I believe your 501004 was identical originally and remained so until disposal in 1956, with a standard Australian spare wheel carrier / toolbox unit fitted in service. These were fitted to Canadian built C60L too, as in the photo below.

Tony, that Sumatra photo is good, I have never seen it before. I blew it up as far as possible and it definitely looks like 501303.
I did start checking Indian Army pictures again last night coincidently.

I reckon this one might be worth ordering a high res copy from AWM. I know it's a longshot but it could be your truck.
