The shovel/pry bar bracket needed some work. Part of it had been badly bent and also torn off at some point. Once straightened out I cut a patch for torn off corner and get it all welded up.

Finished off the two fender stowage bins. I needed to add some lock hasps. Found the exact size needed in a pile of stuff my father in law had given me. Canadian made too. Lastly the pickaxe head bracket was sandblasted. Same part as found on the Universal Carriers.

More parts getting fabricated. Thankfully a few of the tool holding brackets are the same as Universal Carrier parts.

Finished up the sand channel mounts. The threaded portion was made from turning down 1” diameter rod to 7/8”. Then the inside was bored out and threaded to 5/8” NC. The base was 1/4” plate 3” wide. Thankfully 3” square tube with 1/4” wall thickness is available. It saved some time cutting these out with a Zip disk compared to trying to get consistent bends 1/4” plate. These will eventually get welded to the hull. The originals were all cut off.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything about this restoration simply because everything has stood still since mid May. Don’t worry nothing negative has occurred, in fact it’s due to some great news I’ll hopefully post about in the near future that has kept me extremely busy.
Anyway onto an Otter post. I love being able to match up original pictures to where they were taken. These two pictures were recently shared in a FB group showing an Otter LRC driving along a road. The only caption information was that they were taken in Hastings, England in 1942. Thanks to google street view and about 45min of time I found the exact spot. I was able to match up the roof lines after checking street by street. The pictures were taken from the front door of 315 Harold Road. Amazingly even the black pipe railing visible in the first wartime picture is still present today. Even the neighbors house still has the same stone caps on their brick garden wall. Across the street the one building has received a covering of stucco and new windows. But otherwise the buildings are unchanged.

Then and Now
I really like those then and now photographs, great sleuthing. One of the better aspects of the internet is that you don't have to fly to Europe to match up wartime photographs as in many cases you can now do it from the comfort of you own home.

It’s been a while and I finally getting a bit back into it slowly. Lots of good disruptions in the restoration world due to the shop build.
Anyways….. While going through some boxes, I re found these wiring sections I had bought about 12 or more years ago. Turns out they are the correct ones for the Otter.

Hello Jordan.
That is an interesting set of photos you have in Post 216. They raise a lot of questions. What Canadian Army units were based in the Hastings area in 1942 that would have been equipped with, or servicing, Otters? Was Harold Road on part of a regular route to or from the base for said unit, or was this vehicle just out for a road test or sight seeing? Why does it appear these Otter photos do not seem to show either A-Set or B-Set aerial installations on it, or the Bren Gun Mount at the front of the Turret? I like your shirt, by the way. David |

Canadian armoured cars may well have had a different armament to the British ones; Lewis, Vickers or .30 Browning rather than Bren at that stage of the war, too. Quote:

Hastings and area was full of Canadian Army units so its not something easily narrowed down. The turret does have the bren AA mounts. It is just hard to see.

@Bruce Parker, come on Bruce, be a sport. I’m thinking all you armoured car guys could be sporting these. Where’s Peter Duggan at? Not sure if I could rock one with Mules all over it?

Hiding under the palm trees
Guys,
To echo Rob Love, I like Hawaiian shirts and am some what fixated with vintage military equipment, but I am glad that Harry won the race amongst Lynx owners. Having said that, where does one order these customized Hawaiian shirts ? Bruce, if you can go through the challenge of restoring a Fox, it's only a short step to wearing one. Peter |

In preparation for moving the Otter inside I needed to change out a few of the wheels for ones that hold air.The one drum hub is badly cracked all the way around l, however I do have a replacement.
It was a fun two hours in the yard. My wife always wants some help working in the yard….

What would crack a hub like that? Being dropped with no tire?
Anyway, nice to see yard lawn ornament brought inside. |

At least it was easy to free up the brake. Just smash the drum completely !

Barry and Stefan both checked out the Otter project. Stefan and his father Dirk have supplied a lot of the smaller hard to find items to keep these vehicles going. Barry’s help and knowledge has also been extremely beneficial. It’s guys like these that make this forum such a great place.
