Grenade boxes
Hello all,
I finally got my Carrier home this weekend, so I can continue working on it and get it finished in lockdown and I don't have to travel an hour each way to work on it. I purchased a Tarpaulin online which is a reasonable colour and is only 1 foot longer than the proper size (21' x 15'). Also 1/3 of the price being quoted by a UK military vehicle canvas supplier (it was £260 incl postage, vs £800 quoted by a specialist supplier), so it will do the nicely. I can post details if anyone wants them. Question for the forum: I have just gone to fit the two NOS grenade boxes which I bought recently but found the RH one fowls with the rifle rest on the right hand side, so can't open. On closer inspection both have part number CTL1273A, which looking at the parts list is the LH box, the RH box being CTL1273. Does anyone have a picture of CTL1273 so I can see the hole pattern? What's confusing is the LH box uses the two 5/16" holes and the RH boxes looks to use the four 1/4" holes. CTL1273A has both sets of holes, but will only fit on the left? Am I missing something? I'd rather not drill new holes in the NOS box, but don't see that I have much choice if I want to fit it.

Tom, I think your 7 is a 4 as in TL1242/A I may be wrong?
Anyhow, I believe they mount on a wooden spacer. There is an involved thread, but have not searched it. Some boxes have the corner cut off. Some have both sets of holes some have no holes(NOS?) Some have the 4 hole pattern and (obviously) only have the two hole pattern. Mine are marked TL 1242/A (1941), TL1243/A (1941), and one is TL12186 (1940) (un drilled) See pictures. Note that the bolt patterns can be off set. Can anyone tell me why my photos have started coming through up side down. I have used this Samsung S5 for 6 years and they go onto Trademe the right way up? Someone is welcome to flip them over.

I believe the one with the corner cut off is for up beside the driver.

Hello Lynn,
You're absolutely right, the box does read CTL 1243/A. Thanks for the pictures. I'll have a search for the thread you refer to. The amount of information on this forum is brilliant, I've been building up a library of pictures and drawings of all the parts I need to make. If you have any spare of the Driver's grenade box I would be happy to take one of your hands , as I'm missing the Driver's grenade box. Perhaps the undrilled boxes were a way of simplifying the manufacture process so they didn't need to make two types of boxes and left the drilling and fitting to the REME, particularly if the boxes fitted other vehicles?
