Operation Pegasus
I've long known of the operation to bring 140 members of the 1st Airborne Division back across the Rhine after the failed Op Market Garden. The few references I've read pertaining to this operation mention the American 101st retrieving the Brits with the help of the R.E. who supplied the rafts/boats. If any of you have watched the very excellent series, "Band of Brothers", Capt. Dick Winters mentions the "Canadian Engineers" being involved in Operation Pegasus. Is this correct and is this just another example of Canadian efforts being lumped under the Brits or was it an all Royal Engineer show? Does anyone know which Engineer units were involved? Did they man the rafts and cross the Rhine that night or did they just supply the rafts? Lastly, does anyone know which type of rafts/boats were used? Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks, Derek.

I'll go one step further than that... the Canadian Sappers were at Driel in the initial evacuation of the Market Garden survivors. And yes, they manned the rafts and boats. See the assault boat thread for more info.

The 23rd Field Company, RCE was involved in Peg. II not the first one. I can't remember the unit that was involved in the first one but it was Royal Engineers.
Also, no rafts during Operation Berlin, only Storm boats and Assault Boats Mark III. |
