Songs fron the Front and Rear
Hello MLU Songsters,
Surely some of you MLU-ers will know this nostalgic treasure of a song book ... (I begged Sunray to let me post this as he has TWO copies of it and I figured some of you would love to have this joy in your book collection ... and I would like to offer this opportunity for one of you to have it ... I'm sure it will get you singing again, if you haven't for a while ) SONGS from the FRONT & REAR "Canadian Servicemen's Songs of the Second World War" by: Anthony Hopkins copyright 1979 publisher: Hurtig (has photographs, music and lyrics, plus a brief introduction about each song. 192 pages including index. I can't find mention of how many songs are in here, but many, many! The book is in clean good condition, a large softcover. (some of the songs would certainly send ladies running from the room with their hands over their ears and red cheeks ) Starting at minimum of $15.00 CAD plus postage .... BEST OFFER OVER THAT GETS THE SONGBOOK.... Offer ends promptly on SUNDAY, SEPT. 4, at NOON, EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) at which point the highest offer claims it and the exchange arranged. Place your offer here in this thread. (If you'd like, I'll even write down some of the song titles in here ... and if you all are nice to me, maybe I'll even write some of the lyrics ) Karmen |

I can only accept bids from 12:00 EDT or before ... even one second beyond 12:00 EDT is too late and the book must go to the highest bidder closest to, but not going later than, exactly 12:00 EDT that day. (example ... 12:01 ees too late baby ) these rules are non-negotiable and inflexible. I know, I know, I know, I know, I'm a hard sum-witch Court has adjourned Karmen |

The River
Karmen I know this is off topic but my Granddaughter just sent me this and I immediately thought of you.
Three men were hiking through a forest when they came upon a large, raging violent river. Needing to get on the other side, the first man prayed, "God, please give me the strength to cross the river." Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs and he was able to swim across in about 2 hours, having almost drowned twice. After witnessing that, the second man prayed, "God, please give me strength and the tools to cross the river." Poof! God gave him a rowboat and strong arms and strong legs and he was able to row across in about an hour after almost capsizing once. Seeing what happened to the first two men, the third man prayed, "God, please give me the strength, the tools and the intelligence to cross this river." Poof! He was turned into a woman. She checked the map, hiked one hundred yards up stream and walked across the bridge. GO AHEAD! SEND THIS TO A WOMAN WHO NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH! |

Teaser Song Titles ...
The book Title Index lists 120 songs (unless I counted wrong : )
There is also a "First Line" of the song index Below: Here is a song and it's story written in this songbook on pages 66/67 .... I picked it because of "Sunray" reference and dedicate this one to our Sunray Green Grow The Rushes Any old boy scout will know a version of "Green Grows the Rushes": like "Old King Cole" it is adaptable to any environment; in this case, Second War Infantry. The CO is the Commanding Officer, radio code name Sunray, so the Second-in-Command is Sunray Minor. RAP is the Regimental Aid Post, the Regimental Medical Station. Four for the rifle companies because an infantry regiment has four rifle companies. The five-barrelled-mortar which launched German "Moaning Minnie" rockets, actually had six barrels, but six here has been reserved for the six-pounder, a light artillery piece used for anti-tank work. The CO's Rover may be a messenger or runner. But in Normandy Rover designated air force officers assigned to infantry units. Their job was to direct the fire of fighters and fighter bombers engaged in low-level attacks in close support of infantry. 1. I'll sing you one-oh, Green grow the rushes, oh. What is your one-oh? Number One is the old CO And ever more shall be so. 2. I'll sing you two-oh, Green grow the rushes, oh. What is your two-oh? Two, two, the Second-in-Command, They call him Sunray Minor, Number One is the old CO And ever more shall it be so. 3. I'll sing you three-oh, Green grow the rushes, oh. What is your three-oh? Three, three, the RAP - Bang, bang! Two, two, the Second-in-Command, They call him Sunray Minor. Number One is the old CO And ever more it shall be so. 4. Four for the rifle companies. 5. Five for the five-barrelled mortars. 6. Six for the old six-pounder. 7. Seven for the seven days privilege leave. 8. Eight for the sentries at the gate. 9. Nine for the boys in the firing line. 10. Ten for the CO's Rover. chord changes: (sorry, i can't read notes ) C G C C F D7 G C F G7 C C G C G G C C |

That was a memory jogger.
I have the words to the original "Green Grow the Rushes, O", which I got from a sailor. His home town was Bognor Regis and he and his mates were on a naval tour and had docked in Toronto. (HMS Tenby, HMS Wizard and another warship). To my delight, they introduced me to tax-free Whitbread's and Tennent's Lager. Haven't thought about that for ages.

re: songs
I have had a copy of this book since it was published in 1979. It is a must for any military collector. When you have your get-togethers and are finished ogling the green hardware and into the barley sandwiches bring this book out. It supports all branches of the service.
Some other titles are: Good Ship Venus (uncensored) North Atlantic Squadron (uncensored) Artillery Alphabet D-Day Dodgers Ric-A-Dam-Doo Song (PPCLI version) Perhaps required singing at CC5 next year? |

Hi Bruce,
Thanks for your feedback on this songbook It really is special/unique. I don't want to handle it much to hold it open to type out stories and songs ... as I don't want to wear on the binding of it. Its in great condition but it IS about 26 years old!!! I can't believe that people haven't jumped on this I did a little search and the start of $15.00 really is at LEAST half of what I see others asking for it online ... but really, price is irrelevant if they are hard to come by copies. (Jon ... if this keeps up, you may get this book for a steal as the only interested party!) It would be great to see you all fighting each other for this music ... maybe you're all waiting for the last second though? Karmen |

No fix at all, old boy.
Capitalism at its best. Caveat emptor. (I might have to give up a size 58 Australian slouch hat before the deal is consummated...then again, Sunray owes me a Winchester Defender shotgun...Hmmm.) The extrapolation of ponderables could become infinite! Then again, again, it's Yappy's offering, isn't it? $16.00.

Hey, Tonner...
What's with the Fix, Fix, Fix? Are you trying to Fix Bayonets with the Front, Centre and Rear ranks? Collective training at that stage, ol' boy, not individual training!
