Default 105mm shermans leeuwarden

Whilst browsing trough the online archives of the city of leeuwarden, I came across a picture of 105mm shermans with some sort of registration codes on the transmission cover:

KX 1782
KX 1787

Can someone tell me what these markings mean?

This is the address of the site:

http://hcl.pictura-dp.nl/component/o...6/lang,nl_NL/?

Type in "bevrijding"
The picture that I mean is one the 3rd page

Wim

Wim,

The KX-series registration numbers were used for 105-mm howitzer Sherman tanks in use with the Dutch Army after WW2 - see Sherman Encyclopedia -> The Netherlands.

Seems the archive has misplaced them in the WW2 section!

I found one photo of what I think is a Firefly called "Alec" with an AoS of 45.
Who would the reconnaissance regiment have been at this time?
Also a photo of an M8 Greyhound. Sadly no markings are visible though.

Cheers
Kevin

The Firefly belongs to the 3rd Canadian Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment (The Governor General's Horse Guards), C.A.C. of the 5th Canadian Armoured Division.

The M8 Greyhound belongs to the 1st Canadian Armoured Car Regiment (Royal Canadian Dragoons), C.A.C. - I Canadian Corps Troops.

Hope this helps.

Hello Mark,

Thanks for the ID. That's another gap filled. It is a shame that there were no visible markings on the M8 Greyhound.

Cheers
Kevin

Hanno

Thanks for the reply. I remembered from somewhere that the Canadians were at some point in 1944/45 fitted out with some m4 105mm shermans and thought that these might be the ones but indeed the markings are those of the Dutch army's license plates.
