Default D-Day Anniversary CFC Toronto - Aquino Tank Weekend - Decoration Day Hamilton

D-Day 75th Anniversary, Canadian Forces College, Toronto - Aquino Tank Weekend Oshawa - Decoration Day, Hamilton Military Museum

It was a busy three days. D-Day 75th Anniversary event at the Canadian Forces College Toronto on June 6th, Aquino Tank Weekend, Oshawa, June 8th & 9th and the 100th Anniversary of Decoration Day at the Hamilton Military Museum, June 9th. A Big Thanks to everyone who came out to support these events!

D-Day 75th Anniversary, Canadian Forces College, Toronto. Although somewhat of a last minute request, Brian Asbury was able to bring out and display his 1944 Ford GPW Jeep at this event. Bravo Zulu Brian! I tried to make it with my Scout Car but brake problems 16 km out from home had forced me to turn back. A message from Lieutenant-Colonel Cassie, the student at the college who reached out to us.
” Yesterday was an incredible success – thanks to yourself and Brian who indeed made it with his 1944 GPW. Everyone was thrilled. We were honoured by the presence of some WW2 veterans including Flight Lt Albert Wallace, a Lancaster gunner who was shot down and held at Stalag Luft III at the time of the Great Escape.

I am very grateful for your efforts and pleased that you made the decision to favour safety and not drive on with a mechanical problem. Although it would have been wonderful to have you and your Scout car join us, Brian tells me that the 401 was closed at some point and traffic generally was miserable so you would have incurred too much risk. Your dedication to the preservation of military vehicle history and obvious commitment to sharing with the community is laudable. Brian coincidentally met an old friend, now a student at the College, who has restored an M38. A great occasion all around. Although I will soon be moving on from the College, I hope to have a chance to meet you at a future event.

Today is another busy day but I hope to be able to send you a picture soon. Meanwhile, thank-you so much for having worked on our behalf for what resulted in a truly memorable commemoration of such an important day.

Best Wishes, Lieutenant-Colonel Cassie”
Aquino Tank Weekend 2019, June 8th & 9th. What a great turnout! Brian who came back from P.E.I., John/Dietra from Ottawa, Angus from Bruce Mines near Sault Ste. Marie, Kevin/Kylie/Jen/Tyler with a great display, Peter from Cherry Valley with his Lynx II Scout Car and everyone else…what a great effort…it would not have been a success without all of you….THANK-YOU. We’re already looking forward to Aquino Tank Weekend 2020. OMVA trophies were awarded at this event so that members who can’t make it to our Milton event because of long travel distances could have an opportunity to enjoy the presentation of awards. Both the weather and public attendance were great….more on this in CMP #80.

100th Anniversary of Decoration Day, Hamilton Military Museum, June 9th. With the weather being good, this first time event was well attended by participants and the public. The Military Museum was offering free admission which included tours of Dundurn Castle. Along with the MVs, military displays also included a WW1 Display on the lower level of the Coach House, The Canadian Guild of Antique Arms Historians on the upper level and the Vintage Signals Team with an outdoor display. With regards to the display of military vehicles, we (OMVA) extended the museum’s invitation to the NMVA (Niagara Military Vehicle Association) and the results of this “combined operation” were great. A total of 11 vehicles brought out for public viewing and visitors showed great interest in our display. We (OMVA) look forward to working with the NMVA in the future…they are a great group!
