HUP Halfshaft Failure: Anyone have a spare available?
Afternoon all,
A friend's HUP lost rear drive on Sunday while out for a gentle run. No drama, no "bang", just failed. As we suspected, investigation has shown the long halfshaft failed at the start of the splines. It appears to have been a progressive crack that finally failed. We now are looking for a replacement. Does anyone have a spare for sale? Or does anyone know where else the HUP axle was used in GM's small truck range? As that may give us a lead to a spare. Many thanks John

Old threads might help
Hi John
As the saying goes been there had that happen, got the T-shirt. Over the years I've broken both rear axles on my HUP. First time, probably 20 years ago, I got lucky and somebody had a spare. But even then they were scarce as hens teeth. When the other side snapped I when the route of having one made. It worked very well found a race car and performance out fit that gave me really good service. Will look for that old MLU thread. Hear is a more recent thread about having new shafts made http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/sh...xle#post242291 Hope this helps. Cheers Phil

Thanks Phil,
We did suspect that might be the answer. But we were wondering what other vehicles the axle was used with, as seemed unlikely for GM to design a complete one-off for the HUP

Hi
If it did fit anything else would probably been a C15A. I don't have a parts book for those so can't check the part number. But the HUP rear axles part numbers are Right 5807334 Left 5807333. As GM making special parts, while Ford and GM did use common parts from prewar vehicles but I don't remember any with off set differencials. Cheers Phil

That's the earlier thread
Hi Alex
That's the link I reference in the earlier post. As Jonathan thread was newer and his source was closer to John who is looking. Cheers Phil

Spline size/number....
Hi Phil
Did you not also have an issue with finding the correct almost unique HUP spline design for your axle shaft???? On the other hand I do have a spare long and short axle for a HUP.... not sure of the spline pattern........ wish it was not so expansive to ship across the pond or the other side of the world. Cheers

HUP Halfshafts
I have contacted the same company that Jonathon Moore used, and asked for a price for another pair.
Depending on the quote, we may get several sets made as unit cost should be lower. Will keep MLU posted Thanks

John,
I think you need to team up with Jonathan & Phil in having new ones made. But, as a very long shot, if you send me the dimensions of the shaft I can check a recently acquired stock of spares. Hanno
