Yes Petr, something like that, nickel looking and shiney.
It was rough with quite a bit of spatter etc, so I thought my quality of welding would be a good replica. The boss has a few old packets of stainless rods, so I used them.
We don't need to get back into the debate about what was used at the time.

At some point in time I am looking for the detail of the front (observers)shutter. I have nothing but the holes. There is one in France, in Nigel Watsons 3rd book. It is the best detail I have ever seen (Nigel did us such a great deed, putting those books together for us)

As wise guys from the forum sad, I have also one potential issue regarding my nice and big aluminium oil pan. I have made some measurements and it really wont fit without some trimming.
1. the gearlever bar collide with the corner of oil pan, but these are only milimetres, Im sure that bar could be modifed to fit.
2. the current drain plug and bulge above it makes the height of oil pan too big - again its cca 5mm, so could be fixed by grinding whole bulge off and welding flat blanking piece of aluminium on it.
3. the drain plug must be repositioned to fit the hole in the floor.

So I think its still negotiable but with a great effort Im affraid. So if anyone from the honorable forum members has spare good steel oil pan for carrier for sale, I would be very grateful. Please let me know

Yes Richard, they were sealed wit Loctite. I also put a thin layer of copper sealant on the head gasket. Should be OK.

Just made some quick set up of the front of the engine. You can see brand new single pulley pumps there - Im still thinking about use of only one belt as an option (maybe just temporarily).
Dont have proper double crankshaft pulley yet and I think that modern belts are much more capable to the original ones, so even one single belt can withstand the torque of the two old ones. Bad idea?
Anyway, I have double pulleys for pumps on stock, so can be replaced if needed. Still looking for the crankshaft pulley though.

Petr,Do you have the original fan?
It takes a lot of driving and I think both belts will be required.
The fan mounts on a fan extension which has a fibre coupling to drive the generator. No side load is put on the generator bearings.
Usually double pulley water pumps have a bearing in them. Single pulley pumps are bushed.
Your generator is not the right one. It should have a thread on the drive end to take a keyed drive dog.
If you need photos I can look for them.

Edit. The fan needs to be positioned in the fan shroud to work properly. The fan extension does this. you should aim to fit all the shrouds to help the difficult task of moving cool air through the radiator etc.
I have seen carriers that overheat because parts are left out.

No Lynn, Im missing fan extension too, so Im a bit improvising there.
So far I have smaller fan on hand, which is mounted directly to the generator pulley.

DON'T DO THAT!!!

Last year my carrier, with a similar set-up, had the generator shaft break with the fan destroying the radiator! The generator shaft is not strong enough to hold both the fan and the force of the V belts.

I have photos of the incident but do not no how to reduce size so I can post them...

Cheers,

Marc, from what I have been told, even the proper set up fails. The fan centre is a known weakness. However I have heard of more "jackup" failures.
My advice (unqualified) Petr, is look for the right bits.
You have a lot of original bits, with potential for a very original carrier.

Marc, I heard about this incident at Market Garden, but didt saw it on my own eyes. Pics would be certainly useful for me, will send you my email in PM. Thank you!
So guys, thanks both for an advices, surely will try to source all proper bits and set-up the engine as it should be. But it takes time.
Untill I get them, safe and working (but very ugly, I know) solution would be possibly electrical fan.

I used an electric fan on my carrier until I could get hold of the correct setup, it wasn't pretty but it got the job done

I am at a similar crossroads... I have all the correct bits at present but want to run high volume water pumps...... All of which are single pulley, I can't fit my twin pulleys to the new pumps so was going to run one V belt rather than two.... Not sure I will now.

Richard, why do you want to run high vol. pumps?

Pumps that are on are absolute dog muck.

If I am going to spend the wedge I would rather pay for something that works well.

After Christmas cross-fit. Dismantling of the heavily converted carrier chassis I got. Poor guy tried to build a tracked wineyard cultivator on the carrier basis. He did destroy british made, late production vehicle, very rare. Still some nice useabl parts though.

Slowly progressing, few parts refurbished (mainly steering and linkages). I had to totally rebuild also clutch plate, even it was "professionaly rebuilded" by some US company quite time ago and never used since. One lever had a massive dead play, because bushings were just weared out crap. No needle rollers there, just bronze bushings, which is quite common on rebuilded clutches I think.
Engine is almost ready, but need new starter motor armature - unfortunately mine has short circuit to the shaft :-(

Finally got the set of "rifle rests" over the top of the armour. It's a sort of "simple shape" but difficult-to-make parts. Very happy with the result

Petr, on your pressure plate (in a photo in previous post) you have "29.6"
Is that the finger height? if so, was it set on a particular spacer thickness?

How did you roll the rests? What sort of machine?

Hi Lynn, "29.6" is just my reference value from some accessible surface of the clutch disc, in fact, it doesn't mean nothing specific to the flatheads. I set all three fingers to this height, should be OK, but haven't tested it yet.

Believe me or not, none special tooling or machines been used for making the rests. Only very skillful craftsman and good idea
If needed, I think some more could be done

I did compression check today and Im happy with the result. 95 to 110 psi on all cylinders, oil pressure on cranking speed 35 psi - its going to be a beast
Hopefully will try to fire it soon - looking forward to it
