Default MLU-ers 2007

HAPPY NEW 2007 YEAR TO ALL MLU-ERS

I send you all New Years music ...

New Years songs ... different styles for different sound-tastes
http://www.ilovewavs.com/Holidays/NewYears/newyears.htm

Happy New Years world song, In many languages ... for our many MLU-ers around the world! I like to think of us MLU-ers as "one world" or one community of people from around the world
http://www.corin.ch/works/happynewyearsong.html

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne

And surely ye 'll be your pint' stowp
And surely I 'll be mine
And we 'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

We twa hae run about the braes
And pou'd the gowans fine
But we 've wander'd monie a weary fit
Sin' auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn
Frae morning sun till dine
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere
And gie 's a hand o' thine
And we 'll tak a right guid-willie waught
For auld lang syne

[CHORUS]
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll tak a cup o' kindess yet
For auld lang syne

(And now for the English translation

Times Long Gone

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And days of long ago

[CHORUS:]
For old long ago, my dear
For old long ago,
We will take a cup of kindness yet
For old long ago

We two have run about the hillsides
And pulled the daisies fine,
But we have wandered many a weary foot
For old long ago

We two have paddled in the stream
From noon until dinner time,
But seas between us broad have roared
Since old long ago
And there is a hand, my trusty friend,
And give us a hand of yours,
And we will take a goodwill draught
For old long ago

And surely you will pay for your pint,
And surely I will pay for mine
And we will take a cup of kindness yet
For old long ago

Ye wee cowerin' beasties wi' panic in thy breasties...

Default English

Unfortunately I am pure English on the male side and have traced my family back to about 1675, although definitely since 1704. Although we have maternal blood added over the centuries from Wales, Scotland and Ireland, we are English through-and-through, and my mother's side we know we can trace back to about 1775. Again, nothing other than English! And yet we now find that the Hayward/Heyward/Heywood etc. derivations are not necessarily referring to the Hay Ward, the Farm Foreman who looked after the vitally important hay and hedges, but the Scots clan Hay!

And please it is Auld Lang Syne, not Zyne! Thanks also to the Scots for allowing us New Year's Day as a holiday, your hogmanay, in exchange for Boxing Day which was not a Scottish holiday. I can remember the then Labour? Government giving us NYD and also May Day and giving you Boxing Day. It was not that long ago!

That's all right, David, I'm half-English, half-Scots, which why I'm confused most of the time. Google "Winnington-Ingram" and you'll see the English connection (my father's mother was Hazel Winnington-Ingram)... I have a book documenting THAT lineage back to about 1275, in the Worcester area. BTW, Bishop Arthur Foley Winnington-Ingram has MY face... or is it the other way 'round? I have a pic of my dad on the Bishop's lap in 1928...

Default Are ye comin' 'ome lad?

As you are clearly British, Geoff, are you ever coming home? My wife's uncle moved to Canada postwar and becake a professor in the Uni in Ottawa I believe. During the war he worked on naval radar as a boffin. He was last over here years ago, and has never felt the need to do so..I think we have seen him twice in 20 years?

Well, let's square this up... I WAS born here in Canuckistan, but yes, the British connection DOES draw me, at times very hard. Just not sure I could ever afford either your climate OR cost-of-living!

BTW, My mother was born on South Street in St. Andrews. This was confirmed with the Registrar of Fife County when I was last in Scotland staying with Nigel. I have a photo of myself outside that house.

Default Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all where ever you may be!

The problem with being on the Wet Coast is we're the last to celebrate. Everyone else is pi$$ed by the time midnight rolls around here.

English? I thought they were either Norman or Saxon.

I'll raise a glass (Oban, single malt) to fellow Scots around the world. Grandfather from Caithness and grandmother a MacDonald of the Isles.

Slainte

Default From Dawn to Dusk

Kathie and Phil, your firey rayed dawn to glorious dusk photographs are beautiful!!!

Phil, my sister called me today from Winnipeg, and said they've really been dumped on with the snow, but she said it was quite mild out, just hard to get around, what with the snowplows and sidewalk cleaners scarce with the holidays ... I hope you don't get buried under the more snow I hear is coming!

Great shot of the morning sun through the windbreak Phil. I've seen a few dawns lke that at my grandfather's farm near St. Francois Xavier.
There's an experiment I've always wanted to try. Next time you go out at dawn, take a pair of high powered binoculars or a spotting scope and look to the West. Is it true the bald-headed prairie is so flat you can see the back of your own head? ;>)

You have to get the Turkey holiday meals over with before the Haggis time comes round

Here is what I'll be roasting this first day of 2007 ... and it will last me a month or more I'm sure This turkey was a Christmas gift from my landlord!!!! It doens't fit the roaster I have (just gave my bigger one to my daughter for Christmas) My landlord said the turkey is about 13 lbs ??? I dunno. No weight is marked on it that I can see.

I'll roast the bird and enjoy some for dinner, and strip/portion and freeze the rest, for ready turkey for cooking and sandwiches. Turkey ..... up the yin yang for some time to come!!!

I guess it will be the old foil cover trick ... may have to use the broiler pan as the roaster as the roaster is a pretty tight fit!!!

YES ... I'm going to do a sage and oninon, maybe with bacon bits too, stuffing!

A big dinner for a wee Ma Yappy!
