M38A1CDN2 right machine gun mount

Hi Guys,
I have been thinking about getting and installing a right side machine gun mount on my M38A1CDN2 jeep. Does anyone know l could find one and what the price range is for these mounts are? Also what model machine gun was mounted on the jeeps? Thanks

I have sold a dozen or so in the past bunch of years, but I am now out of them. If nobody else has one, then you are going to have to have one copied from an original. They are reasonably simple to make with minimal machining.

The gun on them is the C1 (later modified and redesignated C5A1) which were Cdm modified M1919A4 Browning GPMGs. The items required to modify a m1919 into a c5a1 can be hard to find and pricey. Best just to use a standard m1919A4.

Richard, I was on the cascading end of the 7.62 belt fed MG continuum and trained on the C1, which Rob remembers as the C5. An Israeli M1919A4 will be close enough in function and features, to pass inspection. Since there are not a lot of Canadian reservists who used that gun in training, any criticisms can be excused with the standard restorer's shrug of the shoulders and an appeal to the Gods for compassion that your heart is in the right place. The arm is very similar to one used on the Lynx recce vehicle, but with a less effective travel lock.

Rob (and others) have posted drawings and photos of the Z-arm mount and the ammunition box hanger. If you are going to start fabricating, send me a message with your email address and I'll forward the collected wisdom file folder.

Rob does not remember it as a C5. I spent a lot of time with them as a C1, and when the improvements were made to the guns, they became the C5A1. I was issued one of those as a crew weapon for my MRT in 1996/1997, when they were finally withdrawn.

Technically, it should have become the C1A1, but DND thought there would be confusion with the C1A1 rifle. Technically, there is no C5, although I think they did put that on the cover of one of the manuals.

There is a market in the US for C5A1 conversions. As a result, there are even guys supplying and even making up the necessary pieces to convert the M1919A4 into the C5A1.

I had a Wpns Tech CWO gently correct me, until I showed him the plastic covered C1 MG manual.

The D-ring cocking handle and slide with a safe notch were smart ideas. I remember being impressed by the extractor which didn't have a big hook and the two embedded ball bearings on the bolt face that kept the round from sliding off. There was a line in the lesson plan I remember that wanted gunners to scour old spare parts kits for the 30-06 extractors. All that is behind us now! The idea of hosing 7.62x51 downrange never loses its thrills! Except when the gun won't fire or only shoots single shots.

The RCMP Firearms Reference table used to have a listing for the C1 GPMG, the C5 GPMG, and the C5A1 GPMG. They had a picture of the first and last of those 3, but for some reason did not have one for the C5. Perhaps that was because it did not exist.

How similar in construction was this mount to the Command & Recce GPMG Kit for the Iltis?

The "Z" arm GPMG mount is very robust, and is similar to the GPMG mount for the observer of the Lynx recce vehicle. The Ferret .30-06 MG swivel mount is again similar but just a bit different.

Not much to be said for the arm except it is 2" or 2 1/4" diameter steel tubing. There is a captured ring and block for the crosspin in place of the pintle traverse and elevating mechanism. The head is a square block with another traverse pin for the front pintle. The final fitting is a flat bar between those two pins which has nubs and teeth to hold a NATO spec' ammunition box.

The drawings pages are likely ones saved from Rob and the front view of the mount looks like one of mine.
