Default Recuperator rope?

Good Evening

Anyone know the reason for the rope wound around the recuperator on the 105 on this RCA M7 Priest, just prior to D-Day? I've gotten lots of suggestions, everything from protecting the recuperator from shell fragments, storage, to the idea of soaking the rope with water to help keep the barrel cool. I now am seeing photos of a similar setup on WW1 18 pounders.

Anyone?

Steve
