LP2 wheels
Hi Guys, A friend of mine has just given me a stack of the Queensland Command Reconnaissance newsletters which he is a member of. There's some pics of the carriers which were at Corowa 2005, What took my interest besides a fine collection of vehicles is one carrier which has an all steel adjuster wheel fitted. The NZ manuals and parts lists which are a copy of the Aussie ones mention these wheels but Ive never seen them here. I took it that production for carrier parts here in NZ ceased before these replacement parts were ever needed. Is it rare to see these on Australian carriers or are there plenty of these wheels floating around? The picture attached is from the Command Reconnaissance mag May 2005,

Idle wheel
Hello Bob & David,
Just a thought, how does the reduced diameter of the front wheel effect the amount or number of track links required on each side?sorry I was just thinking out loud seems it must make a difference? Regards, Ron

David,
While they may not be exclusive to the carriers made in WA under one of the last contracts, I have noted that all the WA carriers seem to have this steel idler wheel and also (as is shown in your initial pic), an all steel return roller. No doubt the authorities made refinements as they went along based on performance in the field and maybe in this case, the shortage of rubber - after Feb 42. There were other changes made on WA carriers as well - one of them was a flange extension bolted onto the drive sprocket which was no doubt a way of improving track integrity, but possibly ended up causing a track fouling problem. Hi Ron. The diameter of the all steel wheel U72a is 20 inch, same as the rubber wheels U72 according to my parts list.
Jack, thanks I hadn't picked up on the return roller, I'll have to keep my eyes open and see if any NZ carriers are fitted with these parts. Thanks David... |
