Default more carriers from my past

i recovered this welded hull carrier 1988. it had been used by the research and development establishment at chobham and given the civi reg number RGX 520 (post war reg number 66ZU67).I restored it and i ran it for 12 years in th e colours and markings of one my grandfather ran during WW2, i tried out a couple of colour schemes and finished up with a scheme for northern Italy late 1944. (Richie i think you are going to do the sand and black patern ??? here is a pick of what it will look like ) eventually it was sold to a chap Greece.

this photo show Capt George Banes with my welded hull carrier in 1990. George was the comander of the carrier platoon for the 2nd Btn The Royal Scotts Fusiliers, the unit which my grandfather was the REME fitter for ( same unit Richies Grandfather was a carrier driver, photos have been posted before)

I got this Mk2 no2* in 1998. it had been used a tractor, the front armour had been cut away as well as a large hole being cut in the rear armoour so the driver could look out the back. it had a total strip/ blast and repair as per usual. the floor and track guards had some major holes to repair as well. The front armour i fitted on this carrier was off the first carrier in the "carrier grave yard" thread. I still have this carrier and it is going strong doing about 500 miles a year on the road if not more. Its first run out was to Dunkirk in 2000 following a 6 mile raod test. we did 250 miles that week driving around France and Belgium. its done Eindhoven to Arnhem in 2004 and Arnhem in 2009 . just keep an eye out for Puddle Jumper !

Default Shaun

I'm guessing that SGX520 had no air ducting. My Armoured O.P. (MkIII) has the same shaped removeable glasis plate.

Thats right Lynn, no air ducting but the hole in the bulk head infront of the radiator was larger than one with air ducting. This was a MK3 welded hull.

The chap who had it was a Mr Farros, he had been after a carrier for many years. i stripped it down and sand blasted it , rebuilt the engine etc painted it in the base colour he wanted . here is a photo of it stripped out in the workshop in 2003 i think .

This carrier i purchased from a collector who had started to restore it, I think he got it from Ronald Trustcott. he was doing a wonderful paint job but could not stop it over heating after it had been running for 5 mins. the rad was blocked solid. cleaned the rad and it ran a dream. it is quite a famous carrier in that it was used as a crash tender at Chobham and is show in the "Making Tracks" book. i had this one for 2 years , it is now owned by Marcus Glenn.
