Default F or C 8 Rear Fenders

Although I received a set of drawings which included the ones for the rear fender and braces, the drawing of the fender was incomplete as it did not provide the radius of the rounded corners. Both drawings were missing the guage(s) of steel to use for making each. If someone out there would provide me with that measurement and the guages I'd be most appreciative.

Regards,
Jim

Default Jim F8 fenders

the fenders are 18 gauge ..1.2 mm

the braces are 16 gauge 1.6 mm

radius ... not sure
they had the wire inside the rolled edge as many other vehicles did .. you'll need the machine to do that job . I soldered some pipe along the edge and filed it down.. I dont have one of those fancy machines

Many thanks to Mike for his reply containing the guages of steel to use. I still need the radius of the rounded corners of the fenders.

Jim

Default JIm radius for U

jim

the radius is 2.5 inches plus or minus 1/8" .. the centre point on the radius line on the fender here is about 1/8" inward of the correct radius .. if it was a perfect radius .. I hope you follow me ... in other words ,it isn't a perfect radius ... its out by 1/8' . It's pretty close to the original size as measured from an original . My fenders are not original.. remember that .

Sorry for the crazy posts.. but my browser has gone nuts and it keeps on coming up with a error window ... I'm using IE version 5 .. it's finally given up and decided to cause grief.

Mike:
Thanks for the radius number! I understand your point regarding the variance. Good luck with your computer problems; they can be the worst!

Default Fender and Supports Steel Gauges

Although 18 gauge material was identified for use in making the fenders I'm uping that to 12 gauge just to make them more sturdy. For the braces I'll be using 14 gauge. These gauges should be closer to that which was used in the front fenders.

Regards,
Jim

I know what you mean Jim.. its a guessing game to some extent.. the front fenders appear to be just over 16 gauge ...sort of in between 16 and 14 gauge.

Having said that .. David P will know more about the rear fenders as he has some originals I think. He may be snowed in at the moment ...

We just had a 2 part TV doco here on the ICE roads in BC and Yukon areas.. they drive huge semi trucks to mining camps over frozen lakes ..some of them have fallen through the ice into the lakes ... scary .

I'm not snowed in yet but have been out in Alberta for a while.
Here's some pix of the rear fender corners. They're more like a 3" radius and they are a lot thinner than the front fenders but I don't have anything to measure them. The rolled edge ends up being 3/16" thick. For some reason my mouse won't click on the picture icon so no pix. Sorry about that. Maybe tomorrow.
I tried my Netscape browser and it lets me attach pictures while my Firefox browser won't let me.

David:
Thanks for the info on the fenders. After seeing the ones in your pictures I'm still going with 12 gauge material. I was particularly gratefully for the view given as it answered my question as to whether the rounded edge went all the way round the fender; it does!

Thanks again!

Regards,
Jim

Default fenders

jim

It's not my place to tell you how to do things....but 12 gauge is very heavy ..it's well over 2mm thick ....you may have to get it shaped to the correct profile on a heavy roller machine .

As David pointed out with his pictures , the rear fenders are thinner than the front ones ...which are about 16 gauge or 1/16" in the old system .

With the wire edging .. I used some 3/16" brake pipe and I soldered it along the edge of the 18 gauge sheet ..I filed it down to a round edge and it looks acceptable .

I know of a guy here who also made up a 1A1 body and he used 1/8" steel for the tailgate and other parts like the tool lockers ..but the original tailgate is actually 1.2mm or 18 gauge . The heavier steel also adds a lot of weight to the body... like driving around with an extra 2 cwt on board.
