Default The Algonquin Regiment

Gents,

I have a letter from the daughter of an Algonquin vet looking for info on the Regiment. Is there an existing regimental history of the Algonquins, and if so, does anyone have a copy? Any other known books on the subject would be appreciated, so I can pass along their titles and such. I will refer her to the South Albertas book as a companion volume, as well as specific directions on pulling her father's service record and thei War Diaries.

Also, is there an active regimental association anyone's aware of?

Lastly, if anyone here has a copy ofan Algonquin history, I'll need a reference from it if possible, until she can find a copy herself.

Thanks,

Geoff

Post Re: Algonquin history

Geoff;

I have a 1980 edition of 'Warpath, from Tilly-la-Campagne to the Kusten Canal' - the story of The Algonquin Regiment in the War of 1939-1945, by G.L. Cassidy (ISBN 0-7701-0147-X)(originally published in 1948).

Cheers

Default Regt Histories

The Warpath was first printed in 1948, and a second printing of the original was done in the 1990's. The edition Mark refers to was by Paperjacks (I think) and doesn't include any of the appendicies. It was done in the 1980's as indicated. The reprint may still be available from the Highway Book Shop in Cobalt Ontario. Warpath is one of the better written WWII histories. http://www.abebooks.com/home/HIGHWAYBOOKS/

Default I am a dumb-dumb-poo-poo-head

It took me a while, but Mark's ID of the book's title rang some bells, and forced me to dig through my literary archives (which he well knows are in extreme disarray). I found a copy, mine dated 1990, complete with the appendices. I feel like an idiot. However, I WAS able to pass some useful info along to the lady in question, and await her answer.

Thank you all for your attention to this. You guys are great!

G.

Default Regt Assoc

Sorry missed the question re a regimental association. There is a regimental association, but I am not sure how active it is. Try contacting the Regiment at M.L.Troy Armouries North Bay.
Geoff what is the reference that is required? I have a copy.

Default A Response

This is what I love about this job.... someone you've ben able to help and who appreciates it. I'd like to share with you excerpts of her last. It was titled "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!":

I am so grateful to you. Tears of Joy. Today is my birthday. I cannot
think of a better gift than to share this information with my dad when
he wakes up from his nap.

I am so proud of him. It is beyond my understanding how he, and all
Veterans were asked and they answered and yet treat this ultimate gift
like it was all in a days work.

Dad lost most of his hearing in that incident. came home, did not
complain. I am sure he felt coming home was enough. He and mom raised
10 children on the farm of his father and mother. He lives on that
homestead today.

Only recently I have been asking for assistance for him through Veterans
Affairs to help him with some of the daily chores that are difficult for
him, shoveling snow, cutting grass. I had not asked for much as dad
really still feels the way he did when he came home but now he is 85. I
am appauled and ashamed by the Organization. Dad and mom make a
miserable $100.00 per month to much income to qualify for any
assistance. It is beyond my comprehension how a Veterans yearly income
has anything to do with the gift they gave. They are still Veterans!
I am affraid I have not much regard for government. Sorry for that.

I will print this email out and do my best to send the added information
you mention. My mom still has dad's "paperwork".

Thank You so Very Much

Gentlemen, we do good work.

Default Re Assistance.

Geoff, please ask the lady to get in touch with Veterans Affairs again. My father just received a disability pension for hearing loss due to service in Korea. Tell her to be the advocate and be persistent. The government seems to take the approach that you have to know all the programs specifically or you won't be considered. The best approach is to ask and ask and ask and keep telling them the different issues. I find it hard to believe that her dad can't qualify for some sort of benefits. Unfortunately we have to play the bureaucrats game. Too bad we aren't trying to keep some marketing agency alive.
