Pesky Bolt
Anyone know how to remove this pesky bolt, it is holding the back of the cab to the base of the cab, with it still in place it makes it very hard to remove the cab from the chassis.

First try the penetrating fluid of choice, letting it soak, add more, soak more etc.
If that fails and you want to save the bolt and the spacer apply lots of heat to the spacer and an impact wrench to the bolt head while stopping the spacer from turning (giant vice grips or ?) also consider welding a bar to the spacer as a handle (grind it off later). If you don't care about either the bolt or the spacer cut the one you don't care about. Suitable length and threading bolts are available (just need to cross drill for the cotter pin) and it should be a simple job to turn a new spacer. In my case, I chose to grind the head off the bolt, remove the bolt and spacer from the cab, drive the bolt out of the spacer and buy a new bolt that I'll have to either cross drill or use a self locking nut on. I also plan to grease the shaft of the bolt heavily where it passes through the spacer to delay the next round of rust welding it together. |

Pesky Bolt!
Hello
My thoughts Blow torch [heat source ] to heat up Spacer while avoiding heating lower Bolt section as much as possible. Then use cool liquid to shrink the bolt stem! I used Cold oil to cool Gearbox out put shaft that was stuck in a bearing, Heated bearing up, cooled shaft, Sharp tap with Hammer via a block of wood and they came apart.The tiny gap that is made by the expansion of the OUTER item in your case the spacer and the contraction of the INNER Stud by the rapid cooling should be enough to break any amount of grip. Goggles are or course mandatory also nice thick gauntlets as it all gets a bit hot. |

Tips
Hey Guys
Thanks for the great tips, I have a case of Move-it so will try the lubrication method first, if that fails to get that pesky thing off then I will have to beg borrow or.....rent a torch to try the heat method. I will let you know which one worked. Gary

I use a small propane torch used for plumbing to heat up small parts like that. Its easy to get in and around the objects and only cost $20-30.

Look for something called Thrust
There is a product called "Thrust" It comes in a spray can, and is the best thing I have found next to a cutting tourch!
You can find it at car parts suppliers etc. The stuff really is great, and has saved me lot's of greef over the years Good Luck Mark |

Remove Cab Turn Upside Down and Drive Out
No just kidding, On my C60S I end up cutting the head of the bolt in the cab then lifting the cab. If you are not removing the cab all the way you must have to cut the bolt off under the spacer as well so you can remove the segments.
Then drive the old bolt out of the spacer, I re-drilled the spacer to slide on the spacer along with some anti-seize compound. Did your spacer have rubber washers top and bottom? Cheers Phil

Spacer
Well I have spent the last 5 days 3 times a day spraying "Moovit" all over this bolt and the spacer and still am unable to remove it, looks like I will have to clean it and apply some heat, sigh

Hi Gary........
I'm with Grant and Phil on this one. I haven't the spare time available to spend too long on these sorts of bolts. I had to cut and grind mine off from the inside. When I'm putting it all together I'll either knock/press/drill it out and replace it with another bolt. I suppose if you have the time and budget you could fiddle with it for ages, otherwise get the grinder out? |

After using spray oil I gripped the spacer with a pipe wrench then used a rattle gun on the bolt to shake the rust off. I had to file the wrench marks off the spacer and I used a round file in a drill to ream the spacer out slightly before reassembly.

How did you go with your 'pesky' bolt Gary?
Got home early today and attacked mine. Hit it with a centre punch then drilled a pilot hole. Next was a bigger drill and tapped it out with a punch. Another pain of a project out of the way! Hope you had luck with yours.... |
