Carter carburetor identification
G’day!
I’m trying to help some friends restoring their C15A (radio)... Could you please identify THIS carburetor they found on their vehicle? Next step would be to have a overhaul kit for it! Thank you! Maurizio |

Mmmhmmm.. yes, this was quite obvious from the script “Carter W-1” visible in the first image....
What I meant with “identification”were clues on what specific number of W-1 to check if this was possibly the correct first installation car by for that vehicle... Thank you! Maurizio |

Carb
Sorry I misunderstood your question.
The following Carter carburetor numbers were used on the c15. 387S W1-518S W1-518SA W1-589S The last number is Carburetor second type having a Carter “dust proof” carburetor. I also have a repair Kit listed as 1074-B These numbers are from my c15 parts book 1945. I hope this helps you. All of the W1 carburetors look the same , if you don’t have the tag number to verify that it is the original carburetor I wouldn’t be concerned. Last edited by Paul Singleton; 10-07-20 at 20:17. Ok, i found indeed thus info somewhere in the forum... that’s why I asked a help in identifying THAT carburetor... I’m sure that - as usual with Carter - you have some number somewhere (on flanges?) that allow you to assign a virtual “tag” to the carburetor ... thus, Is this information available with somebody here that owns the correct item?
Thank you! Maurizio |

Scans of the data sheets for the Carter carburetors referenced in the C15A parts manual are attached. These data sheets are Canadian editions (see top, left corner). The information for the 387S, W1-518S and W1-518SA is all grouped on one sheet and appears to be unique to Canadian production based on the "Dept. of National Defence Special Vehicles only" terminology. The information for the W1-589S is on a separate sheet. The W1-589S is listed as being used on 216-270 CID engines which fits with this carburetor being listed in the parts listing for both the C15A and C60X (I didn't check all others).
The sheet for 387S, W1-518S and W1-518SA mentions number 329 being stamped into the face of the carburetor base that faces the intake manifold while the sheet for the W1-589S gives the stamped number as 541 (which matches the photo in the post to follow), which does match the carburetor I bought as NOS W1-589S from Brian Asbury. Due to the different air cleaner mounting, I am certain that the originally shown carburetor is not a W1-589S. The prices shown seem incredible now, under $20 for a complete, new carburetor (less $2.50 if you have one to exchange) and $1.07 for the gasket set. Imagine how little $20 would buy in the way of new carburetor parts today..... |

Attached 2 photos of an unknown Carter Carburetor - not a CMP based on the stamped number 421 on the base. The 421 number is also cast into tbe body of the carburetor. I have no idea whether the matching number 421 on the base and side is normal or just happens to be so in this (isolated?) case.

This manual might be of use to someone interested in all the variations of Carter Carburettors, as used on Chevs, Jeeps and a whole range of other vehicles, plus identifying post-war substitutes.
