Interesting passages from your Grandfather's memoirs. Two of his comments still ring true today; the affability of Canadians and their fondness of drink and bonhommie and the difficulties some Newfoundlanders experience outside of their normal milieu. I noticed the latter during my time in the Canadian Forces, particularly during B.R.T. (Basic Recruit Training). I was soon made aware of the differences among "Townies", "Bay Boys", and "Out Porters" which were internal divisions within the Newfoundlanders themselves. There was a correlation between the ability of the Newfoundland recruits to cope with the pressures of boot camp and the relative isolation of their home back on the "Rock". The few drop outs we had were mainly from the Out Porters who had the greatest difficulty coping with change. I later served with one of the Newfies overseas and rather than experiencing and enjoying the varied U.N. food served in our mess he survived his entire tour on cases of Kraft dinner mailed to him from home. These comments aren't meant to disparage our troops from Newfoundland, as some of the most capable and hard working soldiers in the C.F. are from there, but just an observation on a unique bunch from a relatively isolated part of Canada.

Oh for shame......
...... you should be runout of town for saying Newfoundlanders where part of Canada.... they hated that in the 1940s..... they weres still a Colony...... and to this day I beleive they still have the Royal Constabulary as a provincial police force.
It was ONLY after the war in 49 that they became .....as"smallwood"similated.... and some still don't like it.... ...and to compare us to Australians..... Maudit!!!...but don't mind saying we have a great thirst for brews...... how many countries have basic beer called by the countries name...."Canadian" BooBee PS... nice reading David... check Restoration for a message from the sponsor..
