Happy Dominion Day, you mean! Call me old fashioned...

Just watched a two hour special on the ceremonies commemorating the 90th anniversary of the battle of Beaumont Hamel... very touching. And yes, I was well familiar with the battle long ago.

The Last Post followed by Revielle makes me cry, I'm not ashamed to say.

The CBC in this did very well, surprisingly. What I didn't know is that Rex Murphy, who I like, is a Newfie. I've worked with them in past and love them all.

For those of you not in the loop here, Google 'Royal Newfoundland Regiment' and 'Beaumont Hamel'. 801 went in and next morning, 68 were on parade.

Princess Anne presided over the ceremony in the actual trenches at Beaumont Hamel, while our Governor General did the same in Ottawa today. All in all very well done.

In the meantime, Happy Dominion Day, everyone! This day in 1867, Canada was granted status as an independent Dominion by the Crown, through implementation of the British North America Act.

Geoff,
If you watched the programme then you saw my son. He is the RSM of the GGFG cadets and was an escort. Unfortunately I missed it but hope to see him on the news later.

Of course, Dominion Day, excuse me. The P.C. movement has worked long and hard to erase anything good or noble or smacks of our British heritage. Sometimes I fall victim to their unrelenting attempts to re-write Canadian history.

My unit once bunked at the R.N.R. armoury in Stephenville. We spent several nights in the Jr. Ranks mess being regaled by the P.M.C. of the exploits of the regiment. They have a long and proud history.

History lesson for Geoff et al...

1 July 1867 was proclaimed Confederation Day. 1 July 1879 it was re-named to Dominion Day. As at 1 July 1982, it was and is Canada Day.

And not only that, every single Newfoundland Officer in that action was killed or wounded.

The first day of what was to become the First Battle of the Somme was the worst day for Empire casualities in WW1, with over 57,000 on the one day, and 19,240 of those killed. Australian troops were comitted on 23 July in their first action on the Western Front, after Gallipoli. By the end of the campaign in Nov 1916, Britain and her Allies had 420,000 casualities and nearly 100,000 dead.

The losses decimated Britain's Volunteer Army, with many of the "Pals' Battallions" annhilated. Conscription followed in Britain. The first of three referendums during the war on the question of conscription occurred in Australia following the 1st Somme Battle. Each were defeated, and Australia remained a volunteer Army.

I drove up to Ottawa today with the family to see my son. He is spending the summer with CGG. Today he was with the guards at Rideau Hall and he is a hell of a lot better at drill than what I ever was. Looking good.

After we took the photos of my son and had started to walk away, a bus load of tourists arrived. We watched from a distance while my son was being swarmed by all of those camera yielding tourists. I never imaginrd that my boy would grow up to be a tourist attraction.

So, on July 1, 1982 we made a great bloody mistake then, didn't we?

No face painting, flag waving, hap-py-hap-py Kan-Ah-Da day for me.

Happy Dominion Day, Confederation Day too.

Bruce,

Others share your view, but few go as far as one young punk did at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at National War Monument here in Canada's capital city.

On July 1st, this young "man" decided to relieve himself on the Tomb, to the applause and cheering of a number of his compatriots. He was photographed in the act by a retired officer. This act set off a debate over security at the monument. See http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/index.html for the shot of this fine upstanding young lad. I don't think this type of freedom was on the mind of my Grandfather when he served...

The local talk radio show had callers suggesting punishments, with the majority indicating that because the young lad was probably under the influence of some drug or alcohol, he should be given a pat on the wrist.

I think a suitable punishment for the young lad would be to do community time at the Perly-Rideau veterans' home. There he could try to explain his actions and to learn of the significance of the Tomb.

Any other suggestions?

hi rob

i totally agree with your statement regarding suitable punishment, but before this punk goes anywhere, they should chain him to a sidewalk so that people can relieve themselves on him, no shade, in the boiling sun...and see how he likes it. back here in the east we would cover him in lobster juice and set him on an ant hill...but at the current price of lobster, the punk isn't worth it.

Well, I know what would happen to the fine, young gentleman if he expressed himself thusly here in Texas. However, Canada is a kinder, gentler nation and we have been teaching our students the importance of self-expression, haven't we? If it were up to me his punishment, since he seems enamored of body fluids, would be to clean the bed pan of every Veteran whilst simultaneously apologizing profusely for his desecration of a national monument.

More news from CTV. The 23 year old person from Montreal is being charged with mischief, while the two under age teenagers from Ottawa will escape criminal sanctions and will instead be dealt with under special provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Oh Canada!!!!
WHAT DO CANADIANS HAVE TO BE PROUD OF?
1. Smarties (which came before M&M's)
2. Crispy Crunch, Coffee Crisp
3. The size of our footballs fields and one less down
4. Baseball is Canadian (Yes, we invented it)
5. Lacrosse is Canadian

11. In the war of 1812, started by America, Canadians pushed the Americans back...past their 'White House'. Then we burned it...and most of Washington to the ground, under the command of William Lyon McKenzie King who was insane and hammered all the time. We got bored because they ran
away, so we came home and partied...Go figure..
12. Canada has the worlds largest French population that never surrendered to Germany.
13. We have the largest English population that never ever
surrendered or withdrew during any war to anyone. anywhere. EVER.
14. Our civil war was fought in a bar and it lasted a little over an
hour.
15. The only person who was arrested in our civil war was an
American mercenary, who slept in and missed the whole thing... but showed up just in time to get caught.
16. We knew plaid was cool far before Seattle caught on.
17. The Hudsons Bay Company once owned over 10% of the earth's surface and is still around today as the worlds oldest company.
18. The average dog sled team can kill and devour a full grown human in under 3 minutes.
19. We still know what to do with all the parts of a buffalo.
20. We don't marry our kin-folk.
21. We invented ski-doos, jet-skis, velcro, zippers, insulin, penicillin, zambonis, the telephone and short wave radios that save countless lives each year.
22. We ALL have frozen our tongues to something metal and lived to tell about it.
23. A Canadian invented Superman.
24. We have colored money.
25. Our beer advertisements kick ass
BUT MOST IMPORTANT!
26. The handles on our beer cases are big enough to fit your hands with mitts on.
OOOoohhhhh Canada!!

27. And, we don't bomb our allies.

28. oh yeah... and our elections only take one day.

Pass this on if you are proud to be Canadian!!!

I AM CANADIAN!!!!!!!!!
