Looking for CMP Stud Help

This thread is primarilly directed at the CMP types in SW Ontario that may be making the pilgrimage to Acton for the OMVA meeting on 17Dec.

My truck seems to have been the recipient of a little too much affection some years ago - and a small number of threads were deformed.

Does anyone that is coming on the 17th have a die that I could borrow to tidy up the threads on my wheel stud? To further complicate things, and narrow this down even further, it is a Left Hand thread!

I would be eternally grateful for any assistance that the local fellows might be able to provide.

Stewart, do you know off hand what size the threads are? I have several NF dies at the shop and will either be in Acton on Saturday or at the shop. Am trying to do both. I can check sizes tomorrow and get back to you.

I've had the same problem wheel studs on all three trucks so far I've been able to take care of the problem with a thread file. Slow solution but handy little tool to keep in the tool box.

I think they are 3/4-16 left hand threads.

If yu could lend me one for a few days, i would appreciate it.

I am going to try the thread file, as soon as I can get to Princess Auto to get one. I am there this afternoon doing some Christmas shopping for the wife, and may get myself something nice also!

I hope they have Left Hand files left - it is the Christmas rush.

One time, a long long time ago (4 years) I was working at Barrie Welding and Machine and was machining my brake drums. at the time I thought of cleaning up the threads.

I couldn't find the right left hand die for it so I asked an English fellow that worked there for 20 years if he could figure it out.

He got out the old british thread guage and his assumptions were right...the thread is a 55 degree pitch rather than our 60 degree pitch.

Do you need a new drum, tell me its a front and you can have my spare.

p.s. to loosen the threads up on mine a bit I ended up puting the nut on and off a few times with a coarse rubbing compound and my impact gun.

Thanks for the offers - I will try the thread file and see if I can coax the nut back on. Its just a small spot on the first 2 threads that are a bit off, so I am cautiously optimistic about getting this sorted out.

Chris - if you can find a die, that couldn't hurt for when I really screw it up ( get it - screw it up - a thread joke - hahaha! )

BTW, do you have the special right angled key for the Iltis? I have one if you're interested, hopefully see in you Acton tomorow, depending entirely on weather, of course.

Stewart, try an old time bicycle repair guy. The pedals are left hand thread on some bikes. Years ago there was a guy in Whitby that repaired bikes and he lent me a whole set of British left thread dies. He has since passed away and wouldn't you know it the family threw out a lot of his stuff. If this doesn't work I can trade you a drum from one of my parts trucks. I just need your old drum to put a wheel back on. Hope this helps.

I would like to thank all that replied with words of wisdom, and offers of parts and tools.

I was able to wangle a die into place and get the little bit of thread damage sorted out - and I think that I am good to go to work on getting the CMP brakes sorted out over the holidays.

Chris - I will be travelling to the big city to bail my carb out of the rebuild shop, so I will drop in to see if you are around - to drop off the die you lent me. Thanks.

Please stand by for CMP brake questions - the Carriers don't fool around with that kind of stuff and all of those little parts ...

Does anyone have 2 front brake cylinders and 2 back cylinders for a '43 F15a, I could do cash or cash and trade...ie, smoke discharger mount, carrier view port shutters etc.

They gotta be new old stock or new though.

Rob, go down to your local auto parts store and have them order:
Raybestos WC4571 front
Raybestos WC4511 rear
EIS EH572 master cylinder
or equivalents...
These are the modern parts numbers and are identical to the old ones. At least these were the modern numbers 8 or 9 years ago, they may have to cross them over.
