Top Speed / rev range

Hi all,

I have been doing a few theoretical calculations on Speed and RPM, for my alligator.

Could any of you give me some information regarding your Bren gun carriers....

Firstly What revs (rpm) do you guys take your engines to before changing gear?

What HP rating are the flathead's fitted to your carriers.

What is the realistic max speed you can get your carriers.

I mean tachless - I can't really say how fast the Flatty is winding when I shift, as there is no RMP meter. Its not like my Harley - it shook so bad you knew that you HAD to shift!

I have had the best luck running the engine up as fast as I dare, then shifting as quick as I can remember how to double clutch. Unless the engine is cold, or I am pulling the 6 pounder of S&P museum, 2nd gear is good enough to start and for most parade work ( at idle it is walking speed ).

My U/C MkII* and T-16 both top out at 30-35 mph.

Engage first gear,
engage the clutch and get rolling,
run up to MAX revs - if your govenor is working
press clutch, shift to neutral
release cluch let engine idle
press clutch shift into second
release clutch and repeat steps in 2nd, 3rd.


Now coming back down the gears

ease throttle and apply brake until engine is at idle
depress clutch and shift to neutral
engage clutch and run RPM to govenor stop
engage clutch and shift to next lower gear
engage clutch....

It's a bitch to get the first few times - but it does get easier.

Now lets talk about going over logs...

and dragging guns uphill and keeping the Stacey tow attached..
