66th Anniversary of the Italian Campaign

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 25, 2010) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada and Minister of State (Agriculture), today issued the following statement to mark the 66th anniversary of the Italian Campaign:

"Canada's Veterans are our truest heroes. Throughout history, our service men and women have risen to many challenges to protect and instill Canada's fundamental values in troubled areas around the world. Their selfless commitment and loyalty reminds us of what it means to be Canadian.

Sixty-six years ago, Canadian troops played a vital role in the bitter and costly Italian Campaign, one of the longest and fiercest struggles of the Second World War. Of the more than 93,000 Canadians who served in this 20-month campaign, nearly 6,000 would lay down their lives.

They fought in Italy's rugged mountains, flooded rivers and rubble-filled streets. They fought for peace, freedom and justice—the same values our military men and women continue to protect today. The legacy of our Veterans lives on in the brave Canadians who are serving today in Afghanistan and other areas of the world.

The Government of Canada honours this legacy by continuing to provide essential care and support for Veterans and their families, where and when they need it.

While we remember the Italian Campaign, we are reminded that Canadians appreciate the commitment made by military members and their families. Our Veterans, both past and present, have helped shape our country; their service and achievements are a point of national pride."

. . . did I miss something? . . . The Italian Campaign for Canada, began with the invasion of Sicily in July 1943 (67 years ago) . . . even the invasion of the Italian mainland (September 1943) was 67 years ago . . . sad state of affairs when even the Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada doesn’t know anything about Canadian Military history . . . and for the . . .

Mark, I believe that it was last year or the year before that the government had picked this day in October to honour the troops who served in the Italian campaign. It was around this date that Pte E.A. Smith earned his VC.

Yeah, and it's Blackburn and his bunch of snivelling bureaucrats who consistently deny the proper due benefits accruing to these, and many other, veterans.

Platitudes from sycophants. A pox on them!

Rant ends here, but is forever in my mind.
