Default Special: Van D-Day tot de Dam

The Dutch TV aired a special last May called "Van D-Day tot de Dam" (from D-Day to the Dam). It shows a compilation of film shot by the Canadian Film and Photo units during WW2. Click the link above and go to "Video". Sit back for an hour, don't let the Dutch voice over distract you and enjoy.

Default Once again a rare find

Hi Hanno

Once again you have found something of particular interest to the CMP community and smaller sub group of us interested in broadcasting and news collection. The still photos that come up are very interesting. Could you tell me what to click on the page to view the films? I am working from a back up computer my old iMac so I have not been able to get the films to run. May have to wait for the replacement PC to arrive.

Thanks and Cheers

If I'm not mistaken, Matthew Halton of the CBC is the person pictured.

hi phil,

when your on the site go to the text under "video" (on the right) and click on it

van d-day tot de dam andere tijden 3 mei 2007

a new window appears, choose between:

windows media or real player (real player version is not available)

then the second option, your internet connection speed:

langzaam internet(smalband) slow connection
snel internet(breedband) fast connection

after this hit "opslaan" and enjoy

Thanks for putting the tv footage on Hanno i enjoyed it very much, about halfway through it showed a excellent shot of a rare Austin truck a converted 6pdr portee back to GS any chance of putting a still of it on this thread. I found the boxing section funny i reckon the boxer had already knocked out the ref as he was nowhere to be seen also good to see those kids enjoying the party what a uplift that must have been after suffering all those years. The last colour section of the convoys leaving showed some nice vehicle shots pity the camaraman did not take more although saying that the TV companies edit these shows down to a minimum so its possible there is more

You are correct this is a picture of Matthew Halton, in front of the much traveled CBC Unit Number 4. CBC has some interesting clips of his recordings http://archives.cbc.ca/IDD-1-71-636/...ct_war/halton/

Cheers

Probably a P-38. The holster is definitely German and the paras were well-known for sporting German pistols. The P-38 was 9mm and could use Canadian 9mm ammo. It is possible that the holster (as it appers a bit small) could hold a PP or HSc but I would be surprised.

Caption: “Liberation of Paris, France. August 1944. Photographer: Joe Scherschel”

The C8A is marked “radio Canada”. Does that mean it is a truck of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation?

Radio Canada is the French language arm of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Default C8A in Paris

Note the Press Jeep in front of the C8A; the liberation of Paris was very newsworthy and was covered by a number of Canadian press organizations including the Film and Photo Unit.
