Default M38A1 CDN2 in Pennsylvania USA

Good evening all,

I recently purchased a 1967 M38A1 CDN2 , CFR 67-07770, SN# 97241 from a gentleman in New Jersey. The jeep was released from the Canadian Forces and sold to Sarafan Auto Supply, Spring Valley, NY 17 November 1986. It had sat on the owner's farm outside for over 15 years. Would be interested in finding out additional information as to the vehicles history. I plan on restoring it as a UN jeep that the Canadian forces used in Cyprus. Any assistance my Canadian friends can provide me would be greatly appreciated.

Default 1960's UN markings

This is probably a bit earlier vintage UN markings than you are looking for (~1960)... http://media.wix.com/ugd/279ff1_4b3c...1f6000b404.pdf

Default or this one CDN 3....

You have a choice. The earlier Green Unit also served in Cyprus. As you can see the ol' CDN 3 is in some bad need of some rear springs. The photos were taken at the Canada day parade in North Vancouver. As always, our group makes sure that we have veterans in our vehicles. The last picture is one of my favourites. The year before, we "came across" 20,000 of those little paper Canadian Flags. Well for years after that we always handed them out along the parade route (which was forbidden by the parade organizers). We were very careful in how we handled this. We always kept a number of larger flags in the jeeps and would stop the parade to hand a couple out to the war time veterans or the elderly.
The last picture is one of my favourites. The little boy was caught up in the excitement and dashed out into the street for a flag. Not that he probably wasn't coaxed by Tom Houghton handing out the flag. Tom was a former Peace Keeper and was wounded while serving. He does however....know how to work a crowd!

Hpe all this helps.....R obert

Thank you so very much for your responses. It is truly appreciated that each one of you has taken the time to reply to my request. I am sure that I will have further questions concerning the restoration of my M38A1 CDN2. My goal is to restore it as accurate as a Yank can to pay tribute to the Canadian Armed Forces peacekeepers. You surely have provided a great start!

Thank you all!

Go to Clive's site: http://www.ramtank.ca/m38a1%20index.htm

If you go through the various photos he has attached to the M38A1 (CFRs 077000 to 08900 or so) you will see many in service photos. There are few good photos of the Jeeps in both colours of UN paint and marking schemes. Nice thing with those photos is they are actual in service vehicles. Too often collectors will add too many markings, or markings from several eras all into one unit.

My first thoughts were "Yikes" until I realized you had an Ontario Jeep.

No tac signs that I can see to help you on your quest for it's history. Perhaps underneath the layers. Look particularly on the front fenders, and rear corners. Occasionally they could also be on the front bumper, or the bumperettes, but their longevity was very limited in those locations there since push starting with another Jeep was the norm back then.

Hi Frank,

My M38A1CDN2 was purchased by Sarafan Auto Supply, Spring Valley, NY at Petawawa Canadian Forces Base, 17 November 1986. It was at Gilbert, PA last year. I purchased it from Mr. Pat Tipton of Branchville, NJ.

Rob Love thinks that my M38A1CDN2 may have spent its entire career at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa. I have been trying to research any photos of it during its Canadian Forces service, but no joy.
