Question Census Records

Can anyone tell me what Census Records are freely available in Canada?

More specifically, what records are available after 1911?

Paul.

Hi Paul,

That Automated Geneology site I posted a link for in Anthea's thread but here it is again for you

http://automatedgenealogy.com/

... and no ... 1911 is the last census publically accessible. Years after that are still restricted. Also note that the site only includes 1901/1906/1911 BUT 1906 only covers 3 Provinces I believe.

Hope this helps.

That automated geneology sites census info is transcribed from the national Archives records. Below is the link for the NA (National Archives) and if you scroll down you will see either censuses you can search online (including the easier accessed ones on automated geneology site) or learn how you can view them. Many still on microfiche.

NOTE: the censuses info viewable are ACTUAL IMAGES OF THE CENSUS pages!!! Automated Geneology is awesome, as you can search by name and locations and names linked to past or future censuses, etc. Amazing job of transcribing and putting it all online for the public, hey?

Census Microfilm Reels from 1666 to 1901

Census of 1851

Census of Ontario, 1871

Census of Canada, 1901

Census of the Northwest Provinces, 1906

Census of Canada, 1911

Scroll down that page as there are a lot of really great information you can view and/or access.

Have fun

Another page from National Archives listing their general inventory for Ancestors searches. Some amazing stuff in there!

Ancestry.com will give a new user three free days of searching and downloading images. It's surprising what you can get in three days if you have a good idea what to look for beforehand. Canadian and UK census info has to be 95 years old before release but US is way less. Their 1930 census is online.

Rootsweb also great for checking for family trees (free)

I just entered a search example for "Joseph Smith" ... scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the boxes where to enter information for your search (names, dates, place, etc ... you don't have to enter info in all the boxes. Even just a surname brings up family trees links, but the more info you can enter narrows the search and the number of hits)

Rootsweb family Trees

Hope someone finds this helpful!
