A good job for someone who has the required education and has experience working in a regimental or unit museum somewhere. Also perfect for those who enjoy snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and ice fishing as the opportunity exists for those a good part of the year. Where else can you experience +30ºC in August and 4 months later enjoy the opposite -30.

Clearly you are trying to put a shine on an interesting job on a part of the world many people would intentionally flee.

Not at all Terry. Having lived in cities for the first half of my life, I would never move back. The noise, the crime, the taxes, the traffic....you can keep it. The nearby city of Brandon has a population of around 45,000, so most of what one needs can be bought there. For everything else there is Amazon.

In larger Canadian urban locations you may be hard pressed to survive on that salary.

In this area, that salary is well above the regional average.

Salary is the same for a GT-3 anywhere in the country. If someone wanted to earn more in the civil service, they should have become tradesmen. As well, that is the old salary scale. The contracts are being ratified this month I believe for the new pay raises, much of which is retroactive. (approx. 6.35%) In 12 months the process of contract negotiations will start all over again as this just covers the last contracts which expired in 2018.
One has to remember that there is some security to working for the federal government, dental and health benefits, and a pension waiting for you at the end when you turn 65. And in this case, you get to do museum work. Doing what one loves and getting paid for it as well. How does it get any better?

As for the winter, the buildings are adequately heated. You won't get frostbite if you stay indoors.

Oh sure, no contest there Rob. Regional cost of living index aside.


However: you hit the nail on the head, in my humble opinion. There is a certain time in life when the stars could line up, allowing a vocation to cross over with one’s avocation. The enjoyment of doing what one loves, being paid a reasonable wage with benefits coming in second. Seeking a quality of life.
