Default An Inter Interlude

Been hacking away with the scanner and I thought I might as well share some of the Inter file with my friends on MLU.

Not CMPs of course, but used by the Brits and Aussies so there may be some interest here.

Note that some of the photos may also appear in Bart Vanderveen's various books. Not to worry, he got them from me in the first place, some of them 40 years ago back when Jif was about 15 years old.

Excellent Bill. The last photo looks to be a complicated assembly of machinery and tools.

Hi all:

Cliff, USMC caption on the back says "M 5 6 with Machine Shop Body for Naval Aviation".

Hanno, it is a K-2 Inter woody.

Default Photo 10..

.. Looks like it is (or based on) a "Couse Type B - Shop, engineer, Motrosed, Aviation Battalion"
The Type A is shown in Observers F. V. Directory p39 - but on a Ford 29W 1.5 Ton 4X2.
Many features in Bills photo suggests that this is an adaption of that boby to suit a 6X6 chasis - the top-hinged sides; Lfting frame on rear roof; general shape of roof; Etc.

I'd be very interested to know more about these Couse Laboratories vehicles if anybody knows anything ?

Noel

Default Thanks for sharing

Hi Bill

Thanks for sharing photos like this with us. I edit our local military vehicle collectors newsletter. We have a section that runs when ever we have something of interest. It is call "Dad's Photos" in it we share photos from family albums that are unlikely to have ever shared or published. These like the pictures you posted are something special.

Cheers Phil

I also note on this vehicle that the fuel tank has twin filler necks something that you don't normally see.

Quickie History here.

I started this loooong journey in earnest in 1967 after finding Bart Vanderveen through the magazine Old Motor.

Bart was just then starting to do his book series and we began to collaborate. As it happened, my Dad was still on active duty with the Marine Corps and through his good offices (Well it didn't hurt that he was a Major general) I was able to tap an amazing array of sources for USMC vehicles. And as most of you know, the Army got the Chevs and GMCs for the most part and the Navy and Marines got Inters.

Over the years, I passed most of these photos plus whatever else I collected on to people like Bart who were writing the first real breakthrough series of books and monographs on soft skins.

I also did the same thing with Walter Spielberger and Uwe Feist, both prolific German vehicle historians.

My last major collaborative effort was with Fred Crismon for his books on US Wheeled vehicles and of course his book on the history of International Harvester trucks. That was in the early 90's and as I had started my own business by then I had no time for the hobby up until a few years ago.

Thus, you may see photos that I may post here from time to time that you have seen in some of these fellers books as I am starting to unpack one apple box after another and go through one filing cabinet after another to try to scan as much of these originals in my data base as I can before my time comes.

Regarding the photos of today I can say a bit as follows.

1-3-9 were official USMC photos from Camp Pendleton, Ca.
2 Not sure.
4-8 were official USMC photos taken at USMC Barracks Philadelphia Pa.
5-10 are official photos from the IH archives.
6. Not sure.
7. This is a period advert.

I have a fair bit more on WWII and earlier Inters that I will pass on here but sadly, as I started in 1967 with the real search, an awful lot of what I got was postwar and I just will not have time to get all of that scanned.

I'm glad you are enjoying the stuff so far.

Bill

Bill I have noticed over the years that there are not many photos of WW2 Marine trucks or just post war 1938-1941. So any of these type of years will probably be welcomed with open arms by many.

Once again thanks
Cliff

Another from the IHC archives.
Note the single rears.

Sorry about the quality, I am still learning the new scanner, at least this is a bit better.

Thank you Cliff!!!

I am still learning the new scanner, as I have mentioned earlier.

I now find that if I select 'gray scale" instead of B&W photo even if it is a great photo, it comes out a lot clearer.

I am also playing around with Photoshop 5 to see if I can do an even better job.

But, as long as you and some others are more clever than I am you can always copy my posted photos and fix them.

Bill
