Trailer, Artillery, No. 27
Hi Kevin:
The best a number of us Gunner and RCEME types can figure out is that the trailer was the same and the trays were different. It is possible that the trays were part of the gun stores issued with the 17 pounder and the detachments simply removed the 25 Pr trays and sent them back into the supply system. Please let me know if you learn anything different as I would like to have more firm detail on this question too. Cheers! Mike

depends.
the EARLY 17 pounder was mounted on modifyed 25 pounder carages with work done on the gunshield and mount for the bigger gun to fit. but this was only on a few guns from what i understand. but the mount was unstable and was hard as hell to tow. most 17 pounders were distroyed in trafic accidents and not enemy action. the real 17 pounder mount was a split trail system built for the gun and looked closer to the 6 pounder than the 25. there are 4 or 5 of the guns scattered around arnherm.

Dave, the limber is not the "Carriage" the "Ordnance" is mounted on, it's the trailer that contains trays of ready use ammunition.

Is it possible that the trays that came with the No 27 trailer could be used with either type of ammunition? While the cartridge case of the 17pdr was larger, its projectile was smaller than the 25pdrs. The trays look like they may be long enough. Could they accommodate different diameters of ammunition?

1 Canadian Advanced Base Workshop note in their history that they modified 390 F. A. T. for 17-pounder ammunition storage. What and where, they do not say.
They also note modifying 358 trailers, artillery for unspecified purposes. In the trailers for the 17-pr, at the very least, new trays would have been needed. The 17-pr ammo was fixed and the 25-pr ammo was separate loading projectile and charge.
