Default Dodge Power Wagons in use with KNIL

Here are a couple of picture showing two type of Dodge Power Wagons in use with the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL) after WW2. These were apparently shipped as chassis/cowls and bodied locally.

This is the "first type" (for lack of a proper designation). It is fitted with a body sitting eight troops. Note the long running boards and half-circular rear wheel fenders. The spare wheel is mounted right behind the driver and co-driver.

Default 2nd type

The "second type" has a similar body, most likely made of wood, but no half-circular rear wheel fender nor the long running board. The spare wheel is fitted on the left hand running board.

See my G503 Dodge album for more pictures.

Who can help to identify these Power Wagons?

Who has more pictures of Power Wagons in Dutch use?

Thanks!
Hanno

Found some numbers: the Dodge Power Wagon was built from 1946 until 1968. During this time 95,145 examples were built. Of these, 37,994 remained in the USA, 41,304 were exported and another 13,460 were supplied to friendly nation's armies under the Military Defense Assistance Program. Among the recipients was the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL). As of yet the number supplied to the KNIL is unknown.

Here are some more pictures of Dodge Power Wagons in Dutch use:

This second picture shows a standard Power Wagon, a rare sight in Dutch use.

Default All WDX type I think.

They all look like WDX types.

The last one is a standard truck, the second variants are chassis and windscreen cowl, and the first couple of photos are the same, but with running boards and rear fenders as supplied for firetruck building.

Pretty much the same as WC 3/4 tons, but most had the rear axle with the offset diff to allow a rear PTO shaft. This axle was virtually the same as the intermediate axle on the WW2 6 x 6 truck which had the same offset, but the combination of one short and one long axle shaft under heavy load resulted in a sizeable number of shaft failures (no jokes please...) to the point that some had WC rear axles fitted.

Other differences ? well most had tube shocks rather than the WC knee-action type, and the transfer case had a different ratio split of 1:1 and 1.5 to 1, which gave seven usable forward speeds (the low ratio on the WC series 6 x 6 was 1.96 to one or thereabouts which meant that the number of usable ratios was actually less)

Default Wagons power

I believe Chrysler Australia marketed them here from the early 50's ... in RHD form - but sales were very low . Those weird Belgian adventurers/film makers Armand and Michaela Denis came to Australia in the early 50's and Chrysler here sponsored them with 3 vehicles - a Power Wagon , a Dodge sedan and a pickup . Their travel/wildlife films were famous and their aussie adventure is worth a look see ..

The wiki biography doesn't mention the Australian trip ...

Default dutch armoured power wagon

Hanno,

This armoured power wagon was also used in the former Netherlands Indies. Illustration in a remembrance book about 423 Infantery Batallion of the Royal Netherlands Army.

Here's another picture of this type of truck:

This picture was sent in by a member of Keep Them Rolling many years ago. It was part of an album showing a variety of vehicles as used by the Netherlands Army in the former colony of the Netherlands East-Indies (now Indonesia), during the 1946-1949 time frame. Many of these were CMPs which were taken over from British and Indian Army troops. These troops initially occupied Indonesia after the Japanese surrender in 1945.
After 1946, vehicles were shipped in from the huge Canadian Army vehicle dumps in the Netherlands, or bought on the civilian market like this Dodge Power Wagon with locally manufactured body (others are e.g. Ford/Marmon-Herrington trucks and Willys CJ jeeps).

Gordon, A question: If the center axle was so prone to breaking the long axles, How did they get on when the Detroit Lockers were fitted? I believe that you could break 3 rear half shafts and the truck would still drive on one wheel (ignore the front axle)
My understanding was that the detroit locker drove one side even if the other side had no load, as different from an lsd which requires resistance on both sides to still drive.
Obviously off topic here.
