I think that the rider is Graham Walker who would at that time have been editor of 'Motor Cycling'.

My guess is that having ridden the bike into the gravel workings, he couldn't get it out again.

Chris Hodge's photos are ex-Temple Press, aren't they ?

Yes, I reckon it's a MOTORCYCLING photo..they of course tested military bikes. What's the truck: 6-wheeler? Reminds of a Fordson WO

Default MotorCycling

The motorcycle is a Royal Enfield WD/C. MotorCycling did a article on the WD/C in their 22nd August 1940 issue. But these pictures must have been taken much later, considering the hooded blackout mask.
