Yes, it seems to have had the rack over the cab and there was one coat of camo over about 20 coats of green. Also had an engine heater, and the hot water heater that you sometimes see on M37CDN’s. The one mounted under the glove box. Seems to have had a radio shelter at one time too, pretty interesting truck.

I have limited info on CDN2 CFR 67-08171.....it was rebuilt by a retired military mechanic from CFB Petawawa between 2009 and 2011.....he told me that it was used exclusively by 3RCR.....any additional info? Thanks in advance, lesk |

CFR 78494. Spent most of it's days in Germany (Lahr) and jumped between 1 RCHA and 2 RCHA (Mostly Germany I believe). Came back to Canada to finish it's days in Petawawa where is was released in September of 1995.

All I know about 52-73179 Serial No. 182 is that it was manufactured by Olsen W.H. Mfg Co. Ltd. and disposed of out of ASU/CFB Edmonton in July 2001.

I just checked with a friend on his trailer data plate and the serial numbers are in fact only three digits.

Greetings all!
I have a CDN M101 trailer DND Serial # 0824 Im looking for unit history on it. I bought it from a surplus dealer and brought to the the US, and use it often. I also have a M998, 1945 Willys MB with MBT trailer and M274A5 Mule. Thank you! --Mark |

M101CDN2 serial number 0824 was CFR 92-16122 and was declared surplus out of Ottawa ASU in Nov of 2003. It would seem to have spent some of it's years with Le Régiment de Hull, starting in 1994 , but the VMO trail is not complete.

2 CFR's on my Ilitis
Like every other Iltis I have a data plate that has my CFR. 88113. But I know that there is another location on the frame that has a CFR, just behind the front passenger wheel of the frame. I went in search of this CFR 87355 and found it. I was surprised to see that this CFR is different than what I have on my data plate.
I am assuming that the frame was created in 1987 and the Ilitis it self was assembled in 1988. Hence the difference But just in case I'm wrong does anybody have the official reason for two different CFR's on 1 Iltis Thanks On a side note if anybody have any information on these two CFR's please let me know |

The change could have been during service or after service. For instance, when I was in Cypress in 1989, the Iltis fleet there was replaced by Pajero, as the Iltis were already suffering from the rough roads. The Iltis that were in theater were sent to Shilo, where they were mixed and matched to make serviceable Iltis to return to service.
I personally replaced an Iltis body (due to accident damage) but in that case, it was just a matter of ordering a brand new body in the crate from the supply system. Collectors have also done similar repairs post service. Unfortunately, with the loss of the detailed EDR viewer a few years back, it may be very difficult to get the full work order history on your vehicle(s). The 87 in the frame serial number does not denote 1987. There would be two digits proceeding the 5 digits that would denote yer of acceptance to DND. Iltis were produced for Canada in 1984, 5 and 6. Iltis CFRs
Iltis 87355 was a ECC 121501 Basic manufactured in 1985 and sold out of Valcartier in Aug 2005; while Iltis 88113 was a ECC 121519 Tailgate manufactured in 1986 and also sold out of Valcartier in Aug 2005. Which version of Iltis do you have? Perhaps the bodies were swapped by the vendor?

I bought it from an individual that originally bought it from PreFair here in Quebec. I talked to the gentleman that was responsible for the Iltis’s at PreFair and he mentioned that they did not do any swamps. Quote:

Iltis Swapping
So if I am reading this thread correctly you have a CFR 88113 ECC 121519 Iltis Tailgate data plate affixed to a Iltis ECC 121501 standard body which is mounted on a CFR 87355 standard Iltis frame. Someone created a FrankenIltis!

That maybe the case, or somebody slapped on the 88113 Dataplate on the body of 87355. I look at the back of the Ilitis and there are no hints that the rear use to have a tailgate set up. Radio power box in the corrrect place, framing looks correct, etc...
Still a curious history on this Iltis. I did get information from the freedom of information request on 88113 which showed it spent time in Bagotville and 55 Med in Quebec City. |

Your M101CDN2 Serial No. 1145 was CFR 16338 which was manufactured in 1994 and disposed of out of CFB Gagetown in October 2002. The last recorded user unit was The Prince Edward Island Regiment (RCAC).

Yeah, I guess that is a little tougher if you are not currently connected to the military. Most units have now disposed of hard books and are strictly electronic, so you are probably looking at museums if they grabbed the CFTOs as the paper copies were diposed of. I have been doing that at the Shilo museum, and there is a wealth of info in those old CFTOs, some dating back to the second world war. I collected a lot of them myself over the years, but have been starting to bring them in to the museum and incorporating them into that collection. There may be others here like Ed, who have copies of the data summaries. You normally would have to look up each variant separately, so you would need to look at the C30570 series for the earlier vehicles, the C30670 series for the A2 series, and the C30770 series for the TLAVs. The variants of each generation of 113 will be near the parent numbers I have given. Thing like Lynx, M577A1, ARVL, A1 pioneer dozer will be in the 30570 to 30580 range...later models will be in the later ranged of numbers.
There are also the ELDs, (Equipment Logistic Directives) which will have a lot of information like this, but those are harder to come by. I didn't even know they existed until I got a partial set at the museum from one of the units as they were disposing of their manuals. |

Chasing Vehicle Details
As Rob stated, a lot of information about specific Canadian vehicles can be found in the Data Summaries although the researcher must keep in mind that the document format has evolved over time and the early summaries do not contain the contract numbers or vehicle numbers. The Data Summaries are a good start but they do not tell the whole story and need to be corroberated with other documents in order to compile a complete picture of all of the details for a specific vehicle type.
The M113 series is very convoluted and Clive Law very kindly published my book "The M113A1 in Canadian Service" in 2014 ISBN 978-1-927822-02-9. In that book I state that Canadian purchased 442 M113A1s in 1964 and 352 in 1965. With respect to the M548 Cargo Carrier, Canada bought 80 in 1966 and another 30 in 1983. Canada bought 50 M577A1 Command Post vehicles in 1965 and 1966 and an additional 10 in 1986. Work had begun on the M113A2 book but was stopped following Clive's passing. |
