Financial crisis and scrap value
Just reading a post from Salesman Bob in the McGrath trailer thread which I thought was particularly significant:
Just goes to show something good can come from the financial meltdown. This would have to slow the rate at which the scrappies are outbidding collectors at clearing sales.

Scrap Values
Hi all - I posted this on another thread but here goes. Talking to a scrappie yesterday who said that a month ago he was getting $300/t for heavy scrap but is now only getting $130. And as I said before, if you want it outbid the scrappie. It's not hard.

I think I just repeated myself. Should have read the lead item in this thread more closely. Any it's all good news.

Price
Yes, I have heard the same from several people I have spoken to recently.
Also my local scrap dealer which has been doing a roaring trade for months with a pile several stories high has now cleared it. The yard now looks like it did before the wild prices. I do wonder though what ended up in ships sailing to china. Maybe the best place for a collector during the last six months would have been the unloading docks over there.

Here in Bairnsdale Australia, there are/were 2 scrappies. Now one has closed his doors for the time being. The other is only offering $40-00 tonne delivered to their yard. Aluminum is $0.50c a kilo. Copper and Brass around $5.00 mark.
Simsmetal, one of Australias biggest scrap firms suggested to the first mentioned that as it was a nice day, he should close his gates and go fishing. They wouldn't be looking to pick up from him until NEXT MARCH 2009. Of course, I missed the boat. had a few tonnes to get rid of and didn't get much at all for it delivered. Then there was the weigh-bridge fee to take out of it as well. Cleaned up the yard a bit though. No CMP bits were harmed in this exercise.

Hey Rick,
I'm over in Mirboo North which is not that far from you.. A scrappy told me that if l ordered a 18mtr bin to remove about 8 tons of scrap metal from off my farm and filled the bin myself then they would get the money from the scrapper and they would deduct the difference from cashing in the scrap from the bin cost.... We never saw a cent for the scrap.. Just love it At least l have room for more projects.... |
