Reproducing speedo gear and brass adapter
Hello All,
I have received a quote on reproducing the speedo driven gear and it's adapter. These two parts go in the extension between the gearbox and the rear axle differential and the speedo cable is screwed on to the brass adapter. Richard was kind enough to lend me these rare parts to make this possible. The machine shop offered the adapters for € 80 and the gear for € 90. There will be a 19 % VAT or Sales Tax added to this. In my opinion this is a very reasonable quote on reproducing these parts considering the amount of machining needed. The gear will even be hardened to 58-60 Rockwell for a long lifetime. The parts will be sold on at cost. Please see the attached quote.UC Speedo Drive Quote.pdf Shipping will be extra or can take to Beltring at no added cost. If anybody has a need for these parts and has sofar not contacted me then now is the time to do so. The parts will go in production in a couple of weeks. Cheers,

Marc have you had any takers on this ? i would have thought loads of the lads would need them, or at very least have a spare made.

Richard,
To be honest I'm a little bit disappionted in the response sofar. One member initially asked for a price and wanted 3 or 4 sets. Now only wants 2 of the gears. Kevin wants a set. Aidan has not yet replied but I fear the PM was lost in the transfer of the Forum. I just resend the PM to him. That is all for now. As you say there must be a lot of Carriers in need of these parts or just have these as spares. I think the price is fair considering the amount of machining involved and even hardening of the gear. Don't you agree on this? Selling them on at cost also. Hopefully there will be more response shortly. Cheers,

Aidan is Big Mike....he asked me for one of these a year ago...so it further confirms he is BM.... he may not have posting access on here anymore so you may want to email him to see if he still wants one.
I would say your pricing is very good as they are a hard piece to machine....the brass adapter is the easy bit the drive spindle is a different matter altogether

Hi Shaun,
With the number of Carriers you have had and possibly will have in the future you may need several! Let me know soon if you need a set please. I agree, the price is very fair. I really did my best to get this price. Even offering the company to come by for a drive in my Carrier. Cheers,

Marc...I am connecting the speedo cable in our carrier to the speedometer. The outer cable housing is intact as well as the speedo cable. However, where the cable fits into the speedometer, I don't understand how it turns to activate the speedometer. It would appear that the complete coupling needs to turn since it has a spindle gear on top of it that is connected via a small shaft and coupling that fits over the speedo cable. I'm trying to get the instrument panel in, complete with working speedo and lights, for Father's Day on Sunday. Please advise when you have a moment. Thanks

Hi Richard,
I got a phone call this week that the gears and adapters are ready. I plan on collecting them coming week. The machine shop told me that the second production run, if ever needed, will be costing more as it was more work than anticipated. But they stuck to their quote even do they lost money on this batch! On your speedometer there is a little conical gear. You need an adapter that has a matching gear inside and slides over the speedometer. This adapter has a 90 degrees angle and the oposite side has threading for your cable nut. I bought one of these adapters from Brian Ashbury, it is his picture, but discovered that my speedo already had one. There for it is surplus to me. If you need it you can have it at cost. Cheers,

Speedo pinion gear
Marc,
Thank you for the information and your kind offer. We were able to purchase a new speedometer and it came with the proper adapter plus the little pinion gear. I also have the same adapter and gear on the original speedo. (that was vandalized) Ross Williams gave me a call to explain that the pinion gear should freely spin and that its shaft connects to the end of the speedo cable. Outer coupling then threads onto the speedo cable cover. Both of my pinion gears are seized into the so I couldn't figure out how they worked. Now it is clear and I will free up the shafts and I should be all set. One last question, how much of the opposite end of the speedo cable should protrude from the speedo cable cover coupling for it to fit properly into the brass receiver, just to the rear of the transmission? Regards, Richard.

Hi Richard, Hatkoski not Harrison ,
I was a little bit in a hurry when I posted my reply yesterday. I did not notice that the previous two posts were from different Richards. To be honest I have no idea how much it should protrude because I have not yet got a cable. But if you measure how deep the hole in the shaft of the gear is than that should give you a maximum size. Careful though! The little lug or notch on the inner cable end should not be hanging on the end of the slit in the gear shaft. But I would think the hole will be less deep than the slit is long compared with the inner cable end and the location of the lug/notch. You can easily check this by sliding the gear without the brass adapter on your inner cable. The lug/notch should not be coming to the end of the slit. Hope this is of some help. Cheers,

Richard,
So was I! They were made by a company that was founded in 1904. They are specialized in reproducing almost everything you can imagine that has to do with gears etc. I really hope you can make it as I would like to meet you and have a beer or two, or three... Let me know, otherwise I can mail them back to you when I'm in the UK. Cheers,

nice job.
Hi, Those of you looking to re-commission your speedo's, bear in mind that connecting the drive wire to your speedo and expecting a NOS speedo or one that has stood for a number of years to start working correctly is an oversight.
Before you connect it up I would advise you first stip it down and check the mechanism is free to move or you could be disappointed with the out come, Brian Asbury advised me of this for the two NOS ones he sold me. kev.
