Does anyone know what the red background on the Australian flag was for? I believe that at first both the red and the blue background ones were used, the blue being only used for official functions, then in 1941 the prime minister made it that the blue one was used at all functions.

Max, see Ausflag's page on the Red Ensign.
Australian Troops also used the flag known as the Union Jack, such as these Diggers in New Guinea: |

flag
My mother was looking through some of her old treasures and found a red flag that she had at school. mum asked Kathy when did the flag change from red to blue and Kathy had no idea.
The next day when Kathy arrived at work her boss had his book on flags out to find out what the rules are on flying flags on rememberance day, and there it was, up until 1941 the blue flag was to be used at official functions and the red flag for other. The rules were changed to alow the blue flag to be flown at anytime to stop confusion. Max |
