Default Materborn feature.

Marco.
Here are pictures of Churchill on a visit to 1 Canadian Army in Kranenburg on March 4, 1945. He is pissed. Montgomery refused to give him a drink during the morning conference with Crerar and Simonds, so Simonds gave Churchill "tea" in a tin mug. Churchill got more whisky at lunch. Here he is leaving to go to his car in a merry mood.
Churchill wanted to go to the front line, but his soldiers forbade it. So they drove him instead to the Materborn feature. Churchill had to stop every ten minutes for a pee; Montgomery fumed, everybody else laughed.
The second picture shows them (Crerar in duffel coat, Alanbrooke in a British Warm, frightfully keen Simonds coatless, WSC in a British warm, and Montgomery in some paratroop jacket he has acquired from somewhere) all standing on the Materborn Feature and looking across the flooded Rhine valley into Germany - I suppose towards Emerich. It was misty so they didn't see much - but over there were the Huns, so they were excited.
Can you please identify where exactly they were standing on the Materborn Feature. Is it called the Bresserburg? I suppose it is all covered in trees now so there may no longer be an Aussichtspunkt.

Default Bresserberg.

Marco.
Yes, please.
It would be interesting to see a picture taken from the Bresserberg tower today of what these gentlemen were looking at. The Rhine valley was flooded from Emmerich to Cleve, and from Nijmegen to Calcar. Canadians had occupied most of it and were living in the roof spaces of flooded farms, getting around in DUKWs and boats.
By the way the photographs were from the National Archives of Canada and taken by Barney J. Gloster; PA-145742 and PA-143952.

Default Bresserberg.

Marco.

Good.

But what I would like to see is the view to Emmerich from the Bresserberg.

Crerar, Churchill and the others were looking at the floods.

The map (from Stacey) shows part of Cleve was under water. It shows flooding all the way to Emmerich 8kms away, and Nijmegen which was 17 kms distant.

Have you looked at the book by E. Busch. "Die Fallschirmjäger Chronik", Podzun-Pallas-Verlag, 1983, ISBN 3-7909-0200-4?

He has maps - attached- of where 6 and Fallschirmjäger-Divisions fought, and a brief description.

Default Bresserberg.

Marco.

Thank you. But do it only if it is not too much trouble.

We cannot be certain they were on the Bresserberg.

I thought trees would be a problem.

Can you climb up the Luftwaffe tower and get above the trees?

Tony
