Default 19-Set Control Unit No.1 Mk I & Mk II

The post war Installation Instructions for the Wireless Set No. 19 in the M38CDN reference this particular item. Was this item also used during the war with the MB/GPW 19-Set installations?

Yes: that's the original WS19 control unit that appears just about everywhere except the "truck & ground station" and various specialist setups. (The Daimler Dingo uses one of the "double size" No.3 control units because it all has to fit on the parcel shelf.)

No.1 Mk.1 is the original, with one droplead (commander) connected via the selector switch and the other (gunner) wired to IC only.

No.1A Mk.1 has both dropleads in parallel, controlled by the switch.

No.1 Mk.II has a 4-way terminal strip for connecting Mic, Phones, & Signal via the turret rotary junction box in tanks. Otherwise identical to No.1 Mk.1.

No.1A Mk.II is likewise a No.1 Mk.I with parallel wired dropleads.

Later control units had rubberised dropleads and tropic proofing - protective varnish coating and possibly plastic wiring insulation. Usually denoted by "/I" or "T" appended to the Mark number.

With all the No.1 control units, you need to remove the internal fuse if you are using it as a single control unit setup. (Otherwise switching to IC will blow the fuse as the switch grounds the "A set unattended" line.) This also applies to Control Unit No.17 used with the WS38/31/88 AFV sets.

Chris.
