Default WWII US factory made with 2.5 Ton Studebaker chassis?

A number of years ago I came across an interesting page on the web, unfortunately I can no longer find it.

The interesting facts on the page were about Studebaker losing out to GMC on the 1939 U.S. Government contract for 2.5 Ton 6x6 trucks. Studebaker only getting the contract for the US6 in 1941.

Apparently what happened was that Studebaker was so certain that they would get the contract that they started producing the chassis rails in preparation for production. When they didn't get the contract the rails were put into storage. Sometime after 1939 but before the US6 Lend Lease contract the chassis rails were commandeered as construction materials and were used as the purlins for a factory roof. There was even a photo of the chassis rails in the roof.

Am unsure of which factory, but seem to have an idea that it was Dodge.

Does anyone have any more information about this event or know the link to the webpage?

Hello Diana,

I did a couple of searches and kept drawing a blank. Perhaps you could try to contact the Studebaker museum archives directly? They might be able to help you. http://www.studebakermuseum.org/p/ar...and-education/

Kind Regards
Lionel
