Hello folks,

I have a loyd carrier and will start the restouration at the end of this year.
Can sombody help me with the seach to find the regiment it served with.

specifications;
Patent No. 529353

TRACTOR ANTI-TANK MARK I

Without a some original markings on the vehicle you are reduced to trying to find your registration number in a photograph.

Hallo Paul,

Like Neil said, if you cannot find unit markings on the Loyd, all you can hope for is someone found T-136474 in a unit diary or vehicle listing somewhere. There are some people collection this sort of information, I think they spend more time and money on this aspect of the hobby than many vehicle restorers do on a vehicle restoration.

Is there any one with information/photo's about a Loyd in Canadian service?

you need to buy yourself the carrier books by Nigel Watson it has stacks in about Lloyds and theyre involvements with various theatres etc etc.

Looks to be a nice easy restoration there. It appears to be quite complete, is all the steering there? I will be watching this restoration very closely. Good luck with it mate!!!!

Hi Paul,

One of your questions to me was, who was the maker of our Loyd Carrier. Bart Vanderveen told me in 5/2/97, the following notes:

Loyd Carrier WO-No. T240838 was one of the 6510 Carriers with Contract No. M6619, Ford Motor Co, 13/3/43.

ID (brass) plate in the Loyd: Carrier.Tracked, Towing, No. I W.D. No. T240838

Your Loyd Carrier look like different Paul, maybe you're right: possible an other Factory.

Yes the steering is compleed and working. The only bad thing is the metal work that will be replaced.

And i have got the carrier books, there very good information.

i cant believe the bedford boys say its an easy resto (have i missed the sarcasm) it looks like a mammoth job for me hahahaha. cant wait to see its re birth ! at least you are surrounded by enthusiastic like minded nutters on here.

You haven't missed the sarcasm. There is none. I say it's an easy restoration because attached is what my uncle (possibly me) has to start with. This is pretty much the norm in New Zealand!! YOU GUYS SHOULD CONSIDER YOURSELVES VERY LUCKY!!!

I was just looking at the pictures of the inners of the Lloyd carrier

....... am I wrong in assuming that the frame of the Lloyd carrier is a FORD truck (CMP?) frame installed backwards......... with the track support attached to the side of the truck frame..... ???

If so....... how did the now rear V8 engine manage to have multi (4) forward speeds and one reverse gear.....???? can this be accomplished by reversing the ring gear inside the axle or just flipping the driven axle or having a V8 with a reversed rotation..... ?

Was there a similar application for other CMP based rear engine desgn by Ford...?

I have tried sketching the rotation of the engine in relation to the ring gear in the rear axle..... and believe that flipping the ring gear would have the desired effect........

Am I right...? or do I need another beer.

I'm sure I remember reading some where that the axle was mounted up side down. I just drew a rotation arrow for the prop and one for a hub and turned it over....and it works......or shall I join you in another beer? Ron

.....I did the same thing Ron.... sketching on paper the rotation and changes when the ring gear or the whole axle is flipped over.

Pretty resourceful for the builder...... and raises some interesting ideas for backyard projects.......

yes bob i'll get one too, and tell you how it is.

They got a Fordson 15cwt chassis and turned it backwards. They used the engine, radiator and transmission (US made ford 4 gear gearbox) mounted a axle on the front, put on some brakes on the front and rear with cables and sticks. Then there came an other guy which was pretty handy with sheet metal he went bending and cutting for a day or so. And the result was a loyd carrier

They flipped the whole axle over. Also the radiator fan had to be specially made to suck from the cabin and blow air out the back of the vehicle.

....just flipping the fan blade over ........?? nah your right they would have needed to design a different blade......curve of the blade would be wrong once flipped.

I installed the batteries in my flashlight backwards once..... it sucked out all the light in the room.......

i thought whilst looking at the chassis it looked remarkably like a truck bed. in comparison to the Unversal carrier i would guess these must have been some what lighter ? i really love these things and after my Mk1* is complete i will probably go for one of these or perhaps a T16/Windsor.

....could you do the same reverse rotation using Chevrolet axles..... in fact why not just run the contraption with the engine in front.......and UC tracks..?

Got a spare CMP frame....lots of axles kicking around..... think I know where I can get the running gear from a UC in the woods for the taking......

Up-date. went to the shot blaster to clean some parts and the chassis. Now i can start to repair the chassis and build it up again.

Up-date, all of the parts are done. just waiting for the paint (s.c.c. Nr2 Brown) and we will start building again. The engine is under construction so that will go good as well.

Got the paint, and just start to re-build the carrier. This is realy a good momend to see it growing again.
