Default Regulator Restoration

Hi anyone outhere had experiance with restoring the US style 6 volt regulator used on jeeps and dodges. Mine has a lot of corrosion on joining bars at the back of the coil mounting board. I have cleaned with the wire wheel but note that several conections are preasure contact only to lugs mounted on the base board. My concern is that I am spending time cleaning for no result as I can see that I will end up with high resistance joints unless I solder things up, has anyone tried this?

Has anyone removed the carbon link bars and soldered in copper joints? these carbon bars have an internal resistance of .6 ohm why not 0 ohm?

Has anyone simple removed the inards and replaced with a smaller modern unit mounted on the base board and coneccted to the original fields battery lugs?

Default regulator

Hi

Yes you can mount another regulator inside the original case . But , you need to know if your generator is fitted with Type A or B field coils

A. Internal grounded field coils
B. External gronded field coils

I used to know from memory, which is which.. ford, chev, Jeep, Dodge , Lucas etc.

The vernco web site explains it all very clearly. In many cases, you can bring them back to life with a clean up and adjustement of the points . The points do wear and suffer from arcing .The resistance bars are switched in and out of the field coil circuit by the vibrating points.

Here is the vernco site

http://www.vernco.com/sparks/id569.htm

I recall the days at Camberwell, where Keefy worked , NOS ones in the box were $5 each ...

Good old days they were - Hughes Auto Spares, Jack O'Donnell, Jack White, legends of the spare parts business from the 40s to the 70s.

The regulators were still packed in their tropical packaging I think - they would still be perfect now.

Attached a pic of old Jack I took around 1976 or so when I worked there.

How could you get anything past a gate guard like Elmer Fudd there?

Also, sorry; US stuff would not have even been on the radar!

After I left in 1977 to travel overseas the place was sold and much if not most went into either the scrap bins (like NOS CMP transfer cases) or large bins headed for the tip - these had such tasty items as NOS Cab 12 clearance lights also beautifully boxed, new fuel lines, even some panels. Of course when I left we all thought it would be around forever for us.

Default Max 6v or 12v

The six volt ones have a red ID plate, and the 12 volt ones are green. (They actually say on the plate, but your eyes are probably older than mine)

It was Jack O'Donnell, AKA Elmer Fudd: "Wet's 'ave a wook ovah ear." Which is how most people will fondly remember him.

Default Hughes trading

I will try to fill in some gaps ..

Back in 1976 .. I owned a 42 Mb jeep, the starter motor packed up.. I was told of this place in Camberwell, a Eastern suburb of Melbourne .. Well I searched the street for ages.. just rows of typical Melbourne houses in a quiet back street . No warehouses or commercial buildings in site ... I finally woke up. What's that innocent little alleyway over there ... no signs indicating anything. I drive down and find this huge old warehouse ..bits of Ford V8's everywhere .. heads lying around outside . Hundreds of Ford ring sets falling over on the floor.. rows and rows of WW2 vehicle parts .. literally packed to the roof . GMC , Blitz and Jeep mostly.

In the tiny front office ,Keith showed me few manuals on Blitz , pointing out cab 12 's and such. Would have been the first time I met him.

Being in a prime inner suburb, the land was worth more than the parts I think. I believe the school next door wanted to expand and the writing was on the wall.

Two oldtimers ran the place, Jack O'Donnell and Jack White. Jack O was a bit of a rogue . I found Jack W more forgiving .. on a good day, he would almost give the stuff away . A friend of mine walked away with a huge box of NOS Jeep parts for about 20 bucks... Jack White of course .I bought a whole box of the generic US blackout inserts for 50 cents each or similar, they were ideal for colour matching , still packed in layers of tropic wax paper. There were NOS instruments for CMP NOS Jeep carbies .. It was literally a WW2 storage dump. They had little accessories too , the chev rose tan light switch knobs. I remember the hundreds of packets of Ww2 Jeep front axle rebuild kits, about 5 bucks each.

Sadly, much of it went to scrap . They would get in those big waste bins and fill them up with NOS parts. I saw it myself.. NOS CV joints being chucked in the bin. Somebody actually tried to follow one of the waste trucks , but once it got to Sims it was doomed. During it's last days , I found the NOS cab 12 doors there, 2 sets of them,10 dollars each .

Mike
