Default Submarine ID

I had an uncle who served in the RCN during WW2 as a Wireless Officer. We know he served on HMCS Agassiz and HMCS Timmons. My cousin recently ran across a photo album he had put together during his service. A couple of interesting photos attached.

I am curious about the submarine seen through a porthole. Can anyone identify the type/nationality of the vessel? Seems odd there is nobody visible on deck.

Just been advised by my cousin there are two other photos of the submarine in the album and the sequence indicates it is diving. That explains the absences of crew on deck, but still leaves confirmation of identity.

I will try and get the other two photos posted.

Here's the full sequence of photos. Looks like it was settling into the water stern first. A damaged submarine that surfaced to allow crew to escape, perhaps?

Sadly no documentation on any of the photos as to time or place (which ship my Uncle was on at the time).

Hi David

It doesn't strike me as a series of "action" photos.

I don't know how long your Uncle served after hostilities ended but the sub could be U-190. The photos could be her on her tour or on her way to destruction.

Poking around the inter-web, I see the sea state was worse when she surrendered but similar to your photos in others of her going off to be sunk. Maybe your Uncle was on an escorting ship?

Have you thought about getting his records? They would tell you what ships he was on and when.

regards
Darrell
