Default 41 Ford Bonnet/Hood badge

Good day,
On the Mac's Auto site they show the 1940 Ford car trunk lid emblem can be supplied in red and chrome or blue and chrome, does anyone know what colour they were when fitted to the bonnet/hood on the 1941 Ford CMP. The Mac's one also has a rubber gasket to go underneath the emblem did the CMP have the gasket?
Do you just strip the red or blue paint off and paint the whole thing olive drab?

I have a second hand emblem I bought on ebay from the U.S. it doesn't have any paint on it or much chrome for that matter after 75 years.
Cheers Ken

Not totally certain, Ken, but I think Ford used available stock initially, which would have been civilian market stuff, all chromed and painted. As that stock was exhausted, they went to the none fancy versions.

I have seen early, rectangular instrument panels, for both Fords and Chevs, also show up chromed and overpainted, but the vast majority had no chrome. Probably also civvie stock getting used up first.

Default Emblem

Ken,

The pictures Ive seen, show them in chrome with no other paint on them. Pictures were from the book Blueprint to Victory. One was a line of brand new trucks at the Ford plant in Windsor, the other of a Allied soldier painting his sweethearts name on the bonnet of a truck. The badge is clearly shown in the photo.

I would guess that the badges were painted over in any respray the trucks had done to them during their time in service.

They were the boot badge of a 36 ford car I think.

The one on the 11 cab F30 I once owned in NZ was plain chrome as are all the others I have seen. Tony is correct they were over sprayed with green when the trucks were refurbished.

Default Paint

I'll also check my photos of new Cab 12s. From the few on surviving trucks I've seen the paint tends to flake off faster from the chrome than the rest of the vehicle.

And if you're going to repaint your truck and you want a good match for the original, get hold of the Khaki J from Flowrite in Sydney. Olive Drab is a US colour.

Thanks everyone for your help.
David that makes sense, and also I wasn't sure if it was just a Macs thing with the colours.

Tony and Cliff, that is good to know I like the chrome idea, although Niels red and chrome emblem does stand out.

Niels thanks for the photo. I like that.

Keith, I have never seen an original blitz emblem in the flesh, but the ebay car one I have has even started losing its chrome.
I didn't mean olive drab literally, I call every dark green that isn't gloss, olive drab. In the old days I made my own non gloss green out of Caterpillar yellow undercoat and chassis black. I am not painting yet but I am going to phone Florite soon, do they do spray cans?

Cheers Ken

Thanks Howard, I guess in the end so long as I have a badge on it. It is funny that I am worried about the colour when really I should be pleased that I can even get an emblem 75 years later and I don't have to leave my lounge chair to do it.

Cheers

My cab 11 has a chrome badge painted OD. That looks original.
Think about it. If a Stuka was buzzing around overhead would you want some bright shiny chrome to announce your presence?

Keith, do you know if anyone else has the Khaki J near as good as Flowrite, as I can't find a Flowrite supplier in South East Qld.
